Most of the time, most of us Audio Engineers/Audio Techs/SoundGuys/SoundGals have the same goal in mind. That goal being to ensure that your client has the best experience possible, while working with you, and to make sure that you do your job to the best of your ability. SOMETIMES in the pursuit of wrangling in a challenging room, we might let other parts of the job get a liiiiiittle bit less of our attention. I bring this up because we can only achieve the good, by learning through the bad/the mistakes. So let me take you all through a little journey and give you something to look out for when recording on the X/M32 Platform :)!
Recently I had a show in which I was asked to record the sets of 4 bands at a Festival Style Event. The biggest part of the job (aside from the live show) was the multitrack recordings and board recordings for Social Media Assets to be Engineered in Post. Once SC started, the House Engineer made me aware of some of the problem areas in the room and GEEZ were they right lol. MUCH appreciated, because without that knowledge and there being so many reflections, it may have taken twice as long to soundcheck my Band. Kudos to you Freddy Ramos ! Life saver on that one. Once I started the mission@of wrangling the room, recordings became the secondary priority. At the end of soundcheck I checked the computer, saw that I had signal across all tracks and called it good. THIS, as an Engineer, is where complacency killed that night. SMH 🤦🏻♂️ The rest of the show went fine, everyone reached out and paid their Bills, and I moved forward with organizing and starting the post production mixes. What did I find when I did that you ask? I had 8 channels of drums, repeated, across 24 recorded track. 🤦🏻♂️ AHHHHHHH! I immediately knew what happened. And what I could have done to correct it. Ableton was set up to receive 32 mono tracks from the console, but I DID NOT, go into THE CONSOLE, and check the routing INTO the DAW. Result: Refunds to all of the bands and the knowledge to be better next time.
