Leadership doesn’t require everyone to fly the same way. 📸🪶

These two Scissor-tailed Flycatchers are headed in the same direction, each with its own space and flight path.

Strong teams work the same way. Different strengths. Different perspectives. Shared purpose.

Our job isn’t to make everyone think alike. It’s to make sure everyone knows where we’re going and why.

Alignment isn’t sameness.

Turns out my first leadership lesson of the week came from a Great Blue Heron. And he didn’t even schedule a meeting. 😂

A heron can stand almost motionless while hunting…watching the water and waiting until the opportunity is right.

Then it moves with incredible speed.

Healthcare leadership often rewards quick decisions. Sometimes that’s exactly what’s required.

But experience has taught me that urgency and importance aren’t always the same thing.

Not every problem needs an immediate answer.
Not every silence needs filling.
Not every situation requires our reaction.

Happy birthday to ME!

Another trip around the sun.
🎈☀️📸🪶

And in true Leo fashion, I’m starting this one exactly where I want to be…outside, camera in hand, chasing birds and probably wandering a little farther down the trail than I planned. ♌️😂

Birthdays hit a little differently these days.

I find myself thinking less about the number and more about the life packed inside those years. The people I love, the places I’ve been, the hard seasons I’ve walked through, the things that have changed me, and all the moments I never saw coming.

I’m grateful for all of it.

And somewhere along the way, I discovered this unexpected love of birds and photography that gave me a new way to experience the world. At this stage of life, finding something that makes you genuinely excited to get up early and go exploring feels like a pretty incredible gift.

So this morning there’s no agenda.

Just a trail, my camera, a little birthday gratitude, plenty of Leo energy, and hopefully a feathered surprise waiting for me. 🦁🪶

Let’s see who decides to make an appearance for my birthday. 👀🐦

Friday feels like a good day for a little curiosity. 🪶

Meet the Black-crested Titmouse. A small, energetic, inquisitive, and rarely content to sit still for very long.

It made me think about something we sometimes lose as leaders: the willingness to stay curious.

We don’t always need to walk into the room with the answer. Sometimes our best contribution is the question that helps everyone see the situation differently.

The Lesser Goldfinch isn’t the biggest bird at the feeder.

It doesn’t demand attention.

Yet somehow, that flash of yellow always makes me stop and smile.

It reminded me that influence isn’t always loud.

Sometimes it’s the person who offers a quiet word of encouragement.
The teammate who consistently shows up.
The friend who checks in.
The leader who makes others feel seen.

Small moments of kindness have a way of leaving lasting impressions.

Maybe that’s why this little bird stands out to me.

Some birds stand out because of their colors.

Others because of their song.

The Northern Mockingbird is famous for borrowing sounds from the world around it. It can imitate dozens even hundreds of other birds and everyday noises. But over time, those sounds become part of something uniquely its own.

That made me think about leadership.

Early in our careers, we often learn by watching others. We borrow ideas, habits, and approaches from leaders we admire. There’s value in that.

But eventually, we have to find our own voice.

The most effective leaders aren’t copies of someone else. They’re authentic enough to lead in a way that’s true to who they are.

Nature has a beautiful way of reminding us that learning from others is important, but becoming yourself is even more important.
