“As an artist, I enjoy making things for my home,” says Amanda Rivera of the beloved Austin studio Mother of God Ceramics, sitting in the living room of the charming Spanish Colonial in Travis Heights near an immense painting by the local artist Alexandra Valenti. She shares the home with her husband, Luke Borders, and their child. “A lot of the things that I make, I’ll test out in my home first, and just sit with it. Austin-based designer Cat Alexander has always worked at the intersection of art and environment. Drawing on the centuries-old techniques of Suminagashi and marbling, she coaxes pigments across water to create works that feel as alive as the landscapes that inspire them. Each design begins in the studio, where Alexander hand-mixes her inks and floats them on thickened water before transferring the imagery to treated paper. The results—organic swirls, shifting veils of color, fluid geometries—capture nature’s rhythm with remarkable intimacy.
