My sister dropped one last message in the family chat: I was banned from the reunion, and if anyone sent me the address, they were cut off too.
I didn’t answer. I just tapped the location pin, saw the street name, and had to cover my mouth so they wouldn’t hear me laughing.
They were on their way to my beach house.
So I sat in a silver rental car across the road, sweating through a Georgia afternoon, and watched my mother step out in a giant straw hat like she owned the coastline. Three SUVs filled my shell driveway. Coolers came out. Suitcases rolled over the stone path. My brother carried beer to the deck. My sister filmed the front of the house like she was posting a luxury getaway she paid for herself.
None of them noticed me.
None of them knew the dusty-blue house with the white trim, the oak floors, the marble island, the ocean-facing windows, all of it, sat under my LLC.
Then my mother marched to the front door and typed in the code with that smug little smile she uses when she thinks she beat somebody.
1-9-8-5-0-7.
My birthday.
The same date she used to say ruined her body. The same date she was now using to enter the house she told everyone I wasn’t allowed to attend.
The lock flashed green.
The door chimed.
And my whole family exploded into cheers.
They rushed inside like they belonged there. My sister spun through my living room with her phone up. My brother slapped my dad’s hand. My mother stood in my foyer, one hand on her hip, showing people where to put their bags, warning them not to scratch the paint I picked, not to drip on the floors I paid for, not to touch things like she was the hostess of a house she had never earned.
I let them have twenty minutes.
Twenty minutes to open my refrigerator.
Twenty minutes to pour drinks at my marble island.
Twenty minutes to post photos from my deck.
Twenty minutes to feel rich on someone else’s deed.
Then my phone buzzed.
The sheriff had arrived.
I watched the patrol vehicle roll up slow beside the dunes, blue lights dead, gravel crunching under the tires. My mother’s smile slipped the second she saw the uniform. My sister lowered her phone. My brother actually laughed like this was some mistake that would disappear the second Linda opened her mouth.
The deputy walked to the porch, looked past all of them into my house, then back at the crowd standing in my doorway with drinks in their hands.
And in one flat voice, he asked the question that made my sister go white.
"Which one of you can identify the legal owner of this property?"
