WHO WE ARE

Empty Sink Publishing is dedicated to publishing works from new, emerging, or established writers and artists that encourages the reader or observer to reevaluate the world around them. Started in August, 2013, we want work that stretches the mind, defies convention, and offers a new perspective on life. ADAM DUBBIN, Publisher

Adam Dubbin is a writer/editor/photographer from the swamp

lands of north-central Florida. Adam graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s (B.A.) degree in Classical Studies, and additionally earned a Master’s of Science (M.Sc.) degree from the University of Bradford (UK) in Archaeological Science and a Master’s of Science (M.S.) in Audiological Science from the University of South Florida. While currently employed as a sports statistician with a major sports technology firm, he has also worked in the fields of audiology, journalism, electrical engineering, genetics and environmental sciences. Among other online contributions, he has had photographs published by the BBC, as well as copy edited interviews and research articles published on AudiologyOnline.com. When not working or writing, Adam enjoys the culinary arts, gardening and sports. BRANDEN HART, Executive Editor

Branden is an author living and working in San Antonio, Texas, with his wife, and a neurotic coonhound. He has work published in Toasted Cheese Literary Magazine, Down in the Dirt Magazine, and in the upcoming anthology from XChyler Publishing, Shades and Shadows. Branden and Adam have been writing, editing and publishing together since 2006, when Adam and the other folks at daily magazine TheSequitur.com brought Branden on as an editorial board member-at-large. During their time at TheSequitur.com, Branden and Adam collaborated on and edited hundreds of articles, covered the Bonnaroo music festival four consecutive years, and successfully staged a coup to overthrow a dictatorial regime in a third world country (one of those things is not true). WHAT WE WANT

Empty Sink Publishing is currently accepting submissions of fact and fiction, prose and poetry, and visual media. We are currently not accepting video submissions. We want anything with a fresh perspective on traditional subjects. We are picky. If we reject your submission, it doesn’t mean we don’t like you. It just means that you don’t fit the Empty Sink Publishing mold. It could also mean you are a sh*tty writer, but we probably won’t tell you that in the rejection letter. WHO WE LIKE

Since we’re just starting out, we don’t have much published that will give you a good idea of what we’re looking for. So here is our list of writers and artists we enjoy and admire: this should give you a good idea of our tastes. BRANDEN: Mark Z. Danielewski, Chuck Palahniuk, Etgar Keret, Stephen King, John Crowley, Dan Simmons, Mark Helprin, Frank Zappa, Warren Ellis, Garth Ennis, Brian K. Vaughan, Haruki Murakami, Neil Gaiman, David Wong, Katsuhiro Otomo, Neil Stephenson, Victor Gischler, Harlan Ellison, Philip K. Dick. ADAM: Irvine Welsh, Kurt Vonnegut, John Steinbeck, James Michener, Ayn Rand, George Orwell, H.G. Wells, Arthur Miller, Gabriel García Márquez, Plato, Sonic Youth, Douglas Adams, Tom Robbins, Aldous Huxley, Milo Aukerman, Greg Graffin, Edgar Allen Poe, Stanley Kubric, George Carlin, Darren Aronofsky, Ludwig van Beethoven, Charles Mingus. "Fairy stories such as Beauty and the Beast and Rumpelstiltskin can be traced back thousands of years to prehistoric times, with one tale originating from the bronze age, academics have revealed.

Using techniques normally employed by biologists, they studied common links between 275 Indo-European fairy tales from around the world and found some have roots that are far older than previously known, and “long before the emergence of the literary record”."

"From early on, she advocated for complex roles for women and for serious engagement with social issues. According to Stamp, Weber made films about the fight to abolish capital punishment, about drug addiction, about urban poverty, about the campaign to legalize contraception."

The first American woman to direct a feature-length drama, Weber made woman-centered films with daring commentary. She's barely known now, though the rerelease of two major works may change that.

“Grave of the Fireflies,” the 1988 film that was Takahata’s first for Studio Ghibli, is a still-stunning example. While suffused with near-fantastic elements, “Fireflies,” based on a late-days-of-World-War-II story by Akiyuki Nosaka, mostly uses animation to heighten a harrowing realism.

Isao Takahata’s 1988 masterpiece finally gets a proper theatrical run in New York.

"There’s the slightly high voice of James Joyce, reading an excerpt from Ulysses. A warbling recording captures Lord Tennyson reciting a poem. J.R.R. Tolkien has a short conversation with a tobacconist. There's hours of testimony from WWI soldiers. The national archive of music lives there too, as do hundreds of recordings of nature, the sounds of industry, the oral histories and decades of theatrical performances."

The British Library is fighting time and budget constraints to save its vast collection of audio recordings

"Some truly brilliant books have been published by women in 2018—so many, in fact, that it was nigh-on impossible to whittle down the list to just 18 books. But, here are 18 books that really stood out this year, grabbed our attention and didn't let go until we'd reached the very last page."

It's been a great year for women and books.
