The Day the Sky Belonged to the Mustang :- By early 1944, American bomber crews were paying a terrible price over Europe. Flying deep into German territory, they faced relentless attacks from enemy fighters, and many never returned home.

Everything began to change when the P-51 Mustang arrived in large numbers with long-range es**rt capability. Unlike earlier fighters, the Mustang could stay with the bombers almost all the way to their targets and back again. That meant American airmen no longer had to face the most dangerous part of the journey alone.

The Mustang's speed, range, and agility helped the U.S. Army Air Forces gain air superiority over Europe. As German fighter losses mounted, Allied bombers were able to strike factories, railroads, and fuel supplies with far greater effectiveness. The road to the D-Day invasion became much safer because brave pilots refused to let the bombers fly unprotected.

Thousands of young Americans climbed into these aircraft knowing every mission could be their last. Their courage in the skies helped shape the outcome of World War II and brought victory one step closer.

If you could thank one WWII pilot today, what would you say?
