The paper machine is gone.

But the building around it may already have the layout of a technical school.

Industrial paper machines can require long, continuous production halls because the material passes through multiple stages before becoming a finished roll. That creates something unusual when a mill closes: an enormous linear building with repeated structural bays, heavy-duty floors, overhead access and service infrastructure.

This concept reuses that industrial logic instead of hiding it.

The former paper-machine hall becomes the campus’s main learning street.

Along it, the repeated production bays are permanently divided into practical workshops for carpentry, electrical training, welding, mechanical work and fabrication.

These aren’t temporary classrooms.

Each workshop would need fixed workbenches, technical power distribution, extraction where required, tool storage, safety separation and dedicated service connections appropriate to the trade being taught.

Former roll-storage areas become enclosed classrooms and theory rooms behind glazed partitions.

The existing maintenance galleries above the production floor gain another purpose: circulation between departments and observation of practical training without forcing everyone through the active workshop areas below.

Even the old industrial rail/loading zone could remain useful.

Instead of moving paper rolls, a covered section could provide space for logistics training, material handling and other activities that need more clearance than a conventional classroom can provide.

A real conversion would require major structural, fire-safety, accessibility, ventilation, acoustic and environmental assessments before any training campus could operate here.

But there’s a deeper logic to the idea:

this building was already designed around making things, moving materials and maintaining complex equipment.

The product simply changes.

It once produced paper.

Now imagine it producing electricians, carpenters, welders, technicians and fabricators.

Would you rather see an abandoned industrial site used for skilled-trade education — or redeveloped for something completely different?

They stopped making glass here.

But the furnaces could become the center of an entire neighborhood.

A traditional glassworks wasn’t just one factory building. Production required different spaces for furnaces, forming, cooling, storage and movement between each stage — creating a collection of halls, courtyards and connecting structures.

That industrial layout is exactly what makes this housing concept interesting.

The long former cooling halls become residential wings, with permanent windows and recessed balconies added inside the existing structural rhythm.

The old loading courtyard becomes the neighborhood’s central planted square.

Technical walkways that once connected production areas become covered pedestrian galleries linking the homes without erasing the factory’s original circulation.

And the largest furnace hall gets the biggest change.

Rather than filling it with apartments, its industrial volume is preserved as a protected shared atrium — a place for residents of different generations to meet, sit, eat and move between the surrounding buildings.

Even the chimney stays.

It no longer serves the furnaces, but remains the landmark that makes the former glassworks recognizable from a distance.

A real conversion of a site like this would require extensive structural assessment, remediation, fire-safety work, insulation and entirely new residential services.

But the architectural principle is simple:

don’t turn the factory into something unrecognizable.

Let the factory become the framework of the neighborhood.

Before radar, structures like this were built to listen for aircraft.

A century later, that same geometry could be used for sound in a completely different way.

Acoustic mirrors were large concrete reflectors developed to collect and focus distant sound. Operators could use them to help detect approaching aircraft before they became visible.

They were eventually made obsolete as radar technology advanced.

But the most extraordinary part was left behind:

the enormous concave concrete surface.

This concept preserves that military structure almost completely and gives the hillside a new public use.

The original technical base becomes a permanent stage. Existing maintenance routes provide access, while new semicircular seating follows the natural slope in front of the mirror.

And the dish remains the visual centerpiece behind the performers.

There’s something fascinating about that reversal.

It was built to detect a sound nobody wanted to hear.

Now imagine hundreds of people gathering here specifically to listen.

The concrete stays.
The hillside stays.
The purpose changes completely.

It once processed food by the truckload.

Its second life could be about making sure good food never reaches the trash.

This concept turns a closed fish cannery into something very different from a restaurant or market: a permanent community food rescue hub.

And surprisingly, much of the old industrial layout already fits the job.

The former cold rooms become organized refrigerated storage, allowing recovered food to be separated before it is redistributed.

The main processing hall becomes a preparation area with washable surfaces, fixed stainless-steel workstations and clear routes for sorting, inspecting and packing food.

Then there are the loading docks.

They once moved finished products out to stores. In this new use, they could handle incoming donations and provide a covered pickup point for community groups and families.

That creates a simple flow through the building:

FOOD ARRIVES → GETS SORTED → STORED SAFELY → PREPARED → REDISTRIBUTED.

A real facility would still need proper food-safety procedures, refrigeration, sanitation, pest control and separation between receiving, preparation and distribution areas.

But that’s what makes an old food-processing building an interesting candidate for reuse.

It already understands movement, storage and cold.

The mission is what changes.

It once helped put food on store shelves.

Now imagine it helping keep usable food on people’s tables.

The loading dock was never designed for family life.

But it may be the best part of the house.

This concept starts with a small U-shaped creamery built around a delivery courtyard — a practical layout that once helped move milk, equipment and supplies between different work areas.

The buildings don’t need to change shape for that courtyard to take on a completely different role.

Former loading bays become large glazed openings for the kitchen and living spaces, using the existing industrial openings instead of cutting an entirely new façade.

The raised loading platform is even more useful.

Rather than removing it, the platform becomes a covered gallery connecting the different wings of the house. Bedrooms can occupy the quieter former workrooms, while the main family spaces open directly onto the center.

That changes how the entire property works.

What used to be a place for trucks, crates and deliveries becomes an outdoor room shared by the whole house — somewhere for meals, children, plants and evenings outside.

There’s also a practical advantage to this kind of courtyard layout: different parts of the home can remain physically separated while still sharing one protected central space.

A real conversion would still require major work on insulation, drainage, structure, utilities and any contamination associated with the building’s former use.

But the architectural idea is surprisingly simple:

don’t fight the old industrial layout.

Make it the layout of the home.

No windows along the walls. Soil above the ceiling. And almost no temperature swings outside.

Would you actually live here?

This concept reimagines a former mushroom-growing tunnel as a compact underground home.

Spaces like this were useful for cultivation because being underground can help create relatively stable environmental conditions. But what benefits mushroom production creates a completely different challenge for people: moisture, ventilation and daylight suddenly become critical.

That’s why this conversion keeps both existing ends of the tunnel open.

Glazed vestibules at each entrance bring natural light into the ends of the home, while the original central service passage remains the main circulation route.

The old growing racks disappear.

In their place, shallow built-in rooms and storage occupy the sides of the tunnel, leaving the original vaulted ceiling exposed above the living space.

The kitchen and living room stay close to one entrance rather than being pushed deep underground.

And importantly, there are no fake windows looking through the earth.

A real conversion would need serious waterproofing, drainage, mechanical ventilation, humidity control, fire-safe escape routes and an assessment of the existing structure before it could ever function as housing.

But the architecture creates something a conventional house rarely can:

quiet, enclosure and an almost constant connection to the mass of the earth around you.

For some people, that would feel incredibly peaceful.

For others, claustrophobic.

A tennis court is roughly 260 m² inside the playing lines.

That’s a lot of floor space when nobody plays there anymore.

This concept asks a different question: could an abandoned indoor tennis facility be reorganized as a dog rescue center?

Rather than filling one enormous hall with rows of cages, the former courts are divided by function.

Part of the floor becomes permanent resting suites with solid partial walls, secure doors and small individual yards. These quieter spaces would give dogs somewhere separated from the main activity of the building.

Other court areas become enclosed exercise zones.

The old sidelines and circulation space help create separate routes for staff, animal movement and daily care — reducing unnecessary traffic through the resting areas.

And the building itself already offers something valuable:

a huge weather-protected volume.

Dogs could exercise even when conditions outside are poor, while the original windows and roof structure keep the hall open and naturally bright.

Of course, a real conversion would need proper ventilation, drainage, acoustic control, sanitation systems, temperature management and veterinary planning. An empty sports hall alone doesn’t make a good shelter.

But its size gives designers something to work with.

The interesting question isn’t how many dogs you could fit inside.

It’s how much space you could give each one.

This courtyard was built for deliveries.

Now it could organize an entire family home.

Small creameries and dairies needed practical spaces where milk and other goods could move quickly between vehicles, processing rooms and storage areas. That often meant large working openings, raised loading platforms and several rooms grouped around a service yard.

Those industrial features are exactly what make this conversion interesting.

The former loading bays become large recessed glass openings, bringing daylight into the new kitchen and living spaces without erasing the original brick frames.

The raised delivery platform stays too.

Instead of moving crates and equipment, it becomes a covered gallery connecting the different wings of the house — almost like an outdoor hallway protected by the existing structure.

Former workrooms around the courtyard can then become bedrooms and quieter family spaces, each with permanent residential windows and proper access.

And the courtyard itself changes the most without actually moving.

What was once the hardest, most utilitarian part of the property becomes the place everything faces:

breakfast outside,
children moving between rooms,
evening meals,
a garden,
a place for the whole family to meet.

That’s the part I like about this kind of reuse.

You don’t have to erase the industrial layout.

Sometimes the layout becomes the reason the house feels different from anything newly built.

1 dome. 1 circular pool. 360° of a completely different experience.

The most recognizable part of this old planetarium wouldn’t disappear at all.

It would become the ceiling of a public swimming pool.

This concept removes the concentric rows of auditorium seats and rebuilds the center of the room around a purpose-built circular basin.

The old stepped seating zone takes on a second role: instead of facing a star projector, it becomes a ring of terraces and circulation around the water.

And the rooms already arranged around the perimeter could provide space for changing rooms, showers and technical equipment.

But the biggest architectural feature stays exactly where it is:

the dome.

That creates an unusual 360° room where the water reflects a ceiling originally designed to surround an audience looking upward.

Turning a planetarium into a pool wouldn’t be a simple renovation. A real project would need structural engineering for the weight of the water, waterproofing, drainage, ventilation and humidity control before the building could safely operate this way.

That’s what makes the idea interesting.

The building keeps the geometry that made it memorable — while almost everything happening beneath that geometry changes.

One room once built for looking at the universe.

Now imagine swimming beneath it.
