People have been reporting strange things in Bryce Canyon. Voices calling out from the rocks. Sudden temperature drops on the trail. The feeling of being watched. UFO sightings going back to the 1950s. Most of it is unverified. Some of it is probably imagination.

But there's a problem with calling it all imagination because the Paiute, who lived here for a thousand years, looked at these same rocks and said something very specific. They said the rocks were people who had been turned to stone.

This is the story of three layers under Bryce Canyon: a 1,000-year-old indigenous legend that explains why every modern hiker independently sees the same figures, a Mormon settler who got the canyon named after him because his cows kept getting lost, and a geological clock that's quietly counting down. Thor's Hammer is going to fall in our lifetimes.
