The Life Of Sarah Mirza | Official Cinematic Trailer
One memory is being in a swimming gala, aged 12, I was doing backstroke in my lane and when I looked around to see no one there, I paused wondering what had happened, was it a false start? The coach shouted from the pool side for me to keep going. I was so fast I had raced ahead without realising it. I excelled in sports; my one regret is that I did not find a path to the Olympics. I was good enough, but back in 1970s no one was there to pick me up and nurture my talent.
There is always something inside me that says, ‘feel the fear and do it anyway’. I challenge myself. Delving into the depths of my psyche and dealing with emotional baggage is a common pastime of mine. I would not survive and grow without my spiritual faith, practice and meditation.
I grew up number 4 of 5 siblings. They and my parents all went to Australia. I always said our family do things round the wrong way. The children are supposed to leave, not the parents. I stayed in the UK and carved my own life. Sometimes I missed not having close family around but then being an aquarian I am independent and don’t get lonely for long.
I asked my friends why I did not seem to be attracting any attention from men or being asked out. I was told that I had an independent spirit and intellect that was too threatening. Luckily, I found my man. We had 15 very happy years before he passed.
Despite being seen as a strong woman, I had my fears and lack of self- esteem. I managed to read one of my poems in public for the first time about twenty years ago. I was trembling with nerves and full of adrenalin. No one laughed or shouted me off the stage. It was great.
My career has always been in public service. First trained as a teacher then moved into the Metropolitan police. (Seeking challenges again). After, I worked for Victims of crime, currently I am in the National Health Service.
From racing around on bikes to going for long walks, I grew up with a love of the outdoors with my siblings. At the age of 62 I still love camping and working my allotment. I take care of the birds in my garden and love watching all the critters coming across from the woods nearby.
Apart from being a sports star, school was a negative experience for me academically. I always knew there was a degree in me, so I studied for one and got First Class Honours when I was 54yrs old. I would love to hear those schoolteachers say sorry. Unfortunately, they were ancient in the 1970’s so no chance now.
