The 2026 ODs on Finance Income Report highlighted that the median income in optometry is still $166,000.
That is significant.
Yes, our profession faces challenges. Reimbursement pressures are real. Corporate influence continues to grow. The landscape is evolving quickly.
But this perspective matters:
Despite the obstacles, optometry still provides an incredible opportunity to build a meaningful career, create impact in patients’ lives, and achieve financial freedom.
I think it is important that we acknowledge both realities at the same time:
• The profession has challenges that deserve attention and advocacy
• There is still tremendous opportunity for those willing to grow, adapt, lead, and serve at a high level
For students, new grads, and even seasoned ODs navigating uncertainty, this is an important reminder:
There is still a very bright future in optometry.
The key is continuing to evolve clinically, financially, and personally while staying focused on delivering value to patients and communities.
What gives you the most optimism about the future of optometry right now?
