Colorful. Powerful. Lightning fast. The mantis shrimp isn’t actually a shrimp at all — it’s a stomatopod, and one of the ocean’s most specialized predators. 🌊✨

There are two types, each with its own killer move:
⚡ Smashers: Armed with club-like appendages that punch at speeds up to 50 mph — strong enough to crack shells… and even aquarium glass.
🎯 Spearers: Equipped with spiny, barbed arms that shoot out to impale soft-bodied prey like fish.

No matter the type, both pack an unbelievable punch for their size, making them one of the most fascinating hunters in the animal kingdom. 🥊🐠

The best advice for boaters? Prevent accidents before they happen. That’s the message from Cefali & Cefali Personal Injury Lawyers, who work not just to represent clients after an incident, but to educate and empower the boating community.

In Southern California, thousands take to the water each year — but boating accidents happen more often than many realize. The good news? Numbers are improving:
📉 2021 — 593 accidents, 256 injuries, 44 fatalities
📉 2022 — 556 operators involved, 202 injuries, 38 fatalities
📉 2023 — 440 operators involved, 168 injuries, 30 fatalities

One standout stat: operators with a California Boater Card were far less likely to be involved in fatal accidents. In fact, there were zero fatal cases involving cardholders in 2023.

Stay safe. Get certified. Protect your crew. 🌊

Fishing, swimming, snorkeling, sailing — no matter how you enjoy it, getting out on the water is proven to boost both physical and mental health. 💙 For many military veterans, especially those who’ve served in combat, the open water offers more than recreation — it’s therapy.

There’s a calm that comes with the rhythm of the waves, the smell of the salt air, and the focus of a day spent afloat. For combat veterans, water sports can help heal old wounds, restore a sense of peace, and bring joy back into daily life. 🌅⚓️

Those of us who live the aquatic lifestyle know the feeling well — refreshed, grounded, and ready to take on life back on shore.

In saltwater sportfishing, comfort can make or break the trip — especially for kids, first-timers, or anyone prone to seasickness. 🌊 Out of Oceanside, Captain Chuck White’s Pacific Venture stands apart as the only six-pack charter boat in SoCal equipped with a Seakeeper gyro stabilization system, cutting up to 90% of the boat’s roll. That means less rock, more fun, and a smoother ride for the whole family. 🙌

Farther north, Marina del Rey Sportfishing offers another beginner-friendly gateway to the saltwater scene. 📍 Based at 13759 Fiji Way since the harbor’s early days, they’ve been introducing generations to fishing in a welcoming, easygoing environment. Owner Rick Oefinger has been at the helm since the ’90s, keeping the tradition strong.

Two ports, one mission: making your first saltwater fishing trip one to remember. 🐟⚓️

That small phone cradle on the San Clemente Pier railing? It’s doing big things for beach science. 🌴 Thanks to the new CoastSnap station, your snapshots can help track shoreline changes over time.

Here’s how it works: 📱 Place your phone in the cradle, take a photo, and submit it to the CoastSnap project. These time-stamped images, all taken from the same fixed angle, let scientists measure how beaches erode, recover, and shift with seasons, storms, sea-level rise, and human activity.

Born in Australia at the University of New South Wales, CoastSnap is now a global citizen-science movement — turning casual photos into powerful data for protecting our coasts. 🌍✨

Southern California’s 2025 offshore season is on fire for big game anglers! 🔥 Bluefin and yellowfin tuna are biting consistently, while marlin and swordfish activity is on the rise. Dorado counts may be shy of the epic 2019 season, but the summer fishery across the SoCal Bight is looking strong.

Bluefin remain the top prize—from schoolies in the 20–50 lb range to giants pushing 200 lbs. 🐟 Captains are spotting them everywhere: the backside of Catalina, waters off Santa Rosa and San Nicolas, and deep basins between San Clemente and Santa Barbara Island. Whether they’re crashing bait on the surface or showing up deep on sonar, the action has been steady and exciting for private boaters, charters, and long-range crews alike. 🚤💨

In Southern California, sailing isn’t just sport—it’s tradition. ⚓️ Charity regattas have become a staple of summer, blending the thrill of yacht racing with the heart of giving back. These events raise funds for vital causes like youth programs, hospice care, and community health initiatives.

From September 5–7, 2025, Dana Point Harbor hosts one of the most storied of them all: the Richard Henry Dana Charity Regatta. This iconic event brings sailors together for friendly competition on the water—and big impact on shore. 🌊💫

On August 24, 2025, the legendary Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race made its 48th splash—pitting some of the world’s toughest athletes against the 32-mile channel between Catalina Island and the Manhattan Beach Pier. 🌅💪

Starting at 6 a.m. in Isthmus Cove, paddlers powered only by their hands battled wind, swell, and unpredictable currents to reach the Manhattan Beach Pier. Known as the oldest and most prestigious paddleboard race in the world, it’s a grueling test of endurance and a living link between ancient maritime traditions and modern ocean sports. 🌊🏆

On July 30, 2025, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula sent shockwaves across the Pacific, triggering a tsunami warning that reached the U.S. West Coast.

California didn’t see massive, towering waves—but Southern California harbors still felt the impact. In Dana Point Harbor, strong surges damaged docks and disrupted boating activity, a stark reminder of the ocean’s power even thousands of miles from the epicenter. 🚤⚠️

Jimmy Buffett once said, “The ocean’s always been a salve to my soul… Later down the road of life, I made the discovery that salt water was also good for the mental abrasions one inevitably acquires on land.” 🌊✨

Water has always been more than just a place to swim — it’s a place to heal. For many American veterans, the ocean offers something beyond traditional therapy: freedom, community, and peace of mind. 🌅

Across the country, nonprofits are helping veterans find their footing again by harnessing the power of the sea — combining adventure, therapy, and conservation against the vast, restorative backdrop of the ocean. Because sometimes, healing isn’t found in a hospital or house of worship. Sometimes, it’s found in the waves. 🌊🇺🇸

Offshore fishing isn’t just guesswork anymore. Today’s captains and anglers use satellite technology + real-time environmental data to pinpoint the most promising spots before even leaving the dock. 📡

One of the most game-changing tools? Fish mapping — oceanographic analysis that predicts where fish are most likely to gather. This high-tech edge can turn a long, empty day at sea into a successful haul, for both recreational and commercial fishermen alike. 🚤🐟
