1983 Jag World Championships – 14x Final
All kinds of big names in this one — Carl Butler (JMC), Doug Davis, Mike King — and as BMX Plus! said, Darwin Griffin probably came closer than anyone to showing up as an unknown and leaving as World Champion!

I’ve been going through some old NBL BMX Today magazines, finding some really good stuff in here.

In this shot: Matt Pohlkamp, Mike Day, Kyle Bennett, and Randy Stumpfhauser from the Easter Classic in Orlando.

From reading the report (by Jeff Sack + photo), Mike Day took his first NBL Pro win, passing Jason Richardson down the last straight. Michal Prokop won the other day and then probably a MTB 4x World Cup the next week! 👏

2005 ABA World Championships – Ontario, CA

Would you call 2005 new school, or more toward the end of mid school? Not sure—but here’s a photo of Bubba Harris on the 24” Cruiser, winning the ABA Worlds in Ontario. This shot was featured in the Australian magazine BMXPress. Mike Day took second, and Randy Stumpfhauser won the Cruiser main that weekend.

Just a week later, at the 2005 UCI Worlds in Bercy, France, Bubba won the Elite final, with Mike Day taking second again, and Stumpy grabbed yet another Elite World Cruiser title (I think he won around five total).

Not a bad couple of weeks for all three of them.

New Podcast -

Eddy King is in town (San Diego), and he and his mom dropped by for a catch-up. We hit the record button on the podcast as well.

We talk about San Diego’s deep history in BMX, some of the early tracks from the 70s, and the current San Diego BMX Track (run by Tyler Brown and his wife), which is one of the longest-running tracks in the U.S.—possibly the longest in history.

We also talk about Hall of Fames popping up around the country and ask: why don’t they have one in San Diego or So-Cal?

Other topics include Dirty Fest, the Oakley 50th Anniversary Party that Eddy attended, the NBA Awards, and the upcoming 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles—how it could be the perfect time for BMX history to shine with a side event, museum, or exhibition running alongside the Olympic BMX events.

We also touch on Harry Leary, some Kellogg’s talk, and more. Check it out!

Thanks to Fabien Rolland for the photos from last week’s BOMD 3 event in France. I asked ChatGPT for more insight on BOMD 3—and here’s what came up.

BOMD 3 – La Terre Sacrée (Bicycle of Motocross Day) takes place August 22–23, 2025, in Montdoumerc, in the Lot region of southern France, and is a free, family-friendly vintage BMX festival that recreates the raw spirit of the sport’s 1970s origins.

The centerpiece is a specially built 400-meter downhill dirt track with jumps, whoops, sliding turns, and even a “pool jump,” where over 350 riders from around 10 countries will compete on old-school bikes.

Legendary guests like Stu Thomsen and other world champions will join the action, while the surrounding festival village offers food trucks, a bar, a vintage BMX market, bike exhibitions, fun contests like mullet competitions and kids’ draisienne races, plus vintage car displays and rock-vintage concerts to cap off the evenings.

With its American-style retro atmosphere, community-driven organization, and focus on heritage, racing, and good times, BOMD 3 promises an immersive time-capsule experience celebrating BMX culture at its roots.

NEW Podcast -

Over in the UK at the moment, so going to knock out some podcasts while here. First up, one of the most hard-working, dedicated guys I know in the UK – and the guy behind the Malverns Classic – Si Paton.

Si came over earlier this week and we spent the whole day talking BMX, MTB, and more, and recorded an hour’s worth for the pod.
We talk about Si’s early days growing up in Birmingham, riding Birmingham Wheels with local legends Anthony Butt and the West Midlands early-’80s BMX scene. Si talks about skating alongside BMX and getting into the MTB scene when it was blowing up in the early ’90s in the UK.

We talk about Si putting on the National Downhill Series for British Cycling, bringing the Malverns back with backing from Clive Gosling and GT, and the ups and downs of running a monstrous event – plus how things are looking for this year’s event, which takes place in a few weeks’ time.

We also talk about the Bob Haro / Gumball 3000 – IKONIX Bike Launch London event he was part of last week. We discuss the possibility of a Frogtown or Dirty Fest–style BMX event as part of the future of the Malverns, and potentially even the British BMX Hall of Fame.

Lots more covered from mid-’90s Crewe BMX track sessions with Coach/Trainer Bob Fields (RIP), US trip to the States with Nigel Page. We talk Steve Peat, Jason McRoy, Dylan Clayton, Paul Roberts, the Mammoth Kamikaze, We Were RAD, the ’90s UK rave scene, and more.

It was great to catch up with Si, and hopefully we can do it again later in the year.
