To kick off Women's History Month, we honor Te Ata's mother, Bertie Thompson.

Bertie was a hard worker, tending to housework, farm work and taking care of others in the community. She greatly influenced her children and strongly encouraged Te Ata to follow her dreams.

National Geographic picked this photo as one of their favourites from 2021.

A dance by the water: Photography can be emotional. Photographer Wayne Lawrence was clearly moved after this collaborative portrait of Gene Tagaban, who is Cherokee, Tlingit, and Filipino, performing a traditional dance. Senior photo editor Todd James says “I love this photograph for its timeless simplicity and because Wayne sent me a very sweet note after making this photograph with Gene, saying what a privilege it was to see him perform this traditional dance and how moved he was by that experience. I want to share all of that with our readers.”

Lil Mike & Funny Bone are award winning rappers and brothers who had roles in season one of the shot-in-Oklahoma series “Reservation Dogs.” Known as Mike Bone, they are from the Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma. Though they may look-a-like they are not twins and though they are shorter than everyone else, they are considered too tall to be midgets. They made their national television debut with an unforgettable performance on NBC's America's Got Talent. Since then, they've dedicated their lives to entertaining, empowering and educating listeners with a message of hope through music & culture. www.NAMALIVE.com

On the Pine Ridge Reservation, Dionne Frogg, 19, closes her eyes as peers in the Thunder Valley workforce development program, led by Thunder Valley CDC, lead her on horseback around a paddock. Frogg is learning construction skills, but also participates in equine therapy to tend to her mental and emotional well-being. Because horses are sacred to the Lakota people, riding connects Frogg to her roots and also turns her thoughts to her deceased brother, who used to ride with her when they were young.

"It reminds me of him," Frogg says. "It’s kind of calming."

This community is seeking healing.
