Film photographers Sophie Prettyman-Beauchamp and James Duran don’t just document the Southern California punk and indie scene; they’re immersed in it.

The photos they take reflect their love of the artists, fans, and venues that have kept it alive since the Germs, the Go-Gos, and Black Flag began tearing up L.A. stages in the late ‘70s.

For Duran, Prettyman-Beauchamp, and their friends, these photos are the archive of fleeting moments from the scene’s swirling center, evidence of the fashion, culture, relationships, and of course, the music that will one day be SoCal history.

Film plays a unique role in archiving that history and in complementing the scene’s DIY ethos. Duran and Prettyman-Beauchamp cherish analog photography for its unpredictable nature and reliability amid the ubiquity of digital forgery and cloud services. 

“You don’t get to perfect it in the way that we get to perfect everything these days,” Duran said. “It’s very raw, and it’s very real. Everybody uses those two words to beat film to death, but it’s true.”

It’s not just about appreciation,it’s about protection.

As we celebrate World Ocean Day, we are reminded that the ocean is not just something to admire from a distance. It’s a living world that asks something of us in return. There are the quiet battles being fought every day by individuals, coastal communities and organizations who refuse to look away.

They are the ones who rise with the tide and work long after it recedes; clearing shorelines, restoring habitats, challenging pollution and defending marine life that cannot speak for itself.

And so today is not only a celebration, but a reflection. A reminder that the health of our oceans is written not just in waves and currents, but in the choices we make and the protection we are willing to give in return.

Finding balance between work and life is essential for keeping the creative spirit alive. But for storytellers, it’s never really as simple as putting the camera away.

Even on vacation, there are stories unfolding beneath the surface, light hitting just right and experiences worth holding onto.

Last week, visual storyteller traded the everyday for the waters of La Ventana, Baja California, where she spent her days free diving alongside sea turtles, manta rays and vibrant fish.

Trips like this remind you why you create in the first place.

What does it mean to be an emerging leader today?

We followed the Girls Scouts of San Diego across the county as they met inspiring “Cool Women” and discovered what leadership means to them.

Instead of telling their stories for them, we handed them the mic.

“What does it mean to you to be an emerging leader Girl Scout today?”

They led the conversation in their own words, sharing their perspectives, ambitions and the individuals who most inspire them.

This fast paced journey across the city reminded us how powerful it is when young women are given the space to be heard authentically.

After 22 years in the Navy, Yogi thought the hardest part was over.
But stepping into civilian life felt like starting from scratch.

Then he found something unexpected. Community.

Through the San Diego Community College, he discovered support, purpose and people who believed in him.

What started as a new chapter became a new mission: helping fellow veterans find their footing too.

We followed the Tijuana River Coalition to the capitol to meet with ocean advocates, organizers and defenders from all across California, all coming together to protect the waters and coastlines we all call home.

This year marked 50 years of the Coastal Act and Coastal Conservancy, but the message throughout the event was clear that the fight to protect our ocean is far from over.

San Diego is currently facing one of the largest public health emergencies in the nation, stemming from water and air pollution from the Tijuana River.

Witnessing these coalitions, some youth lead, discussing policy with passion, urgency and hope was honestly inspiring to witness.

There are stories that deserve more than attention, they deserve appreciation.

It was a privilege to capture this moment honoring the child care providers who show up every day with compassion, patience and care for San Diego’s children and families.

Listening to their stories, witnessing the impact they make, and celebrating the people behind this essential work was a reminder that true community is built through care.

To all the providers we met, thank you for letting us share your flowers and your stories.
