I've been getting a lot of questions about tools for beginners to learn the basics of photography and Holiday gift ideas.. Here are the most effective 2 learning items I've found and my favorite product.
1. The Better Books iPhone/iPad app (on sale 50% of at $2.99 NOW). https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/master-your-dslr-camera-better/id487976827?mt=8
This is cheap and really interactive. These guys have several really cool apps that are a better learning resource than a book that is crammed with filler to satisfy the publisher. A book on photography should not be 2-300 pages.
2. A course from Udemy: http://www.udemy.com/courses/Arts-and-Photography. This is course material taught by real photographers, with helpful videos, PDFs, assignments, etc. Truly like taking a class on photography.
I also have been getting questions on gift ideas for photographers. The best I can think of is my favorite and most used product I own: The split strap/C-Loop combo: http://www.customslr.com/products/camera-split-strap #.UMN6AZPjmz4. Its $59, the strap is much wider and comfortable which makes it feel like your camera weighs nothing, and the mechanism at the bottom lets your camera hang upside down by your side rather than on your chest in front. This means no more bumping on your chest when you walk, and a quick draw effect by pulling your camera from your side (easier to walk through crowds and not bump your camera) and sliding it across your chest to your face. Just watch the video at http://www.customslr.com/products/c-loop/ #.UMN7C5Pjmz4 and you'll see what I'm talking about. This company was started 2 years ago by 3 photographers in SF on Kicktstarter and their customer support is 2nd to none.
Happy Holidays!
