As we mark the Fourth of July today, the Philippines and the United States of America are also celebrating the 76th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries, known informally as Filipino-American Friendship Day.

On 4 July 1946, the U.S. officially recognized Philippine independence and sovereignty, and established diplomatic ties with the Philippines through the Treaty of General Relations and Protocol signed in Manila.

Seventy six years later, Philippines-U.S. relations remain robust and resilient, buoyed by strong diplomatic, military, economic and people-to-people ties. The Philippines continues to be America’s oldest treaty ally in Asia, while more than four million Filipinos and Filipino Americans call the U.S. their home.
