"The Great Mountain Biking Video" was the first mountain biking video title ever produced, in San Diego, released in 1988. In it, Mark Schulze, an early innovator of the Helmet Cam, used his invention to videotape mountain-biking clips from the rider's Point of View. This is the first known video title that incorporates video Helmet Cam footage.
This is one of the first videos to incorporate goods from sponsors to “soft-sell” their products. Raleigh provided bicycles used by some of the mountain bikers appearing in the video.
Top pros appearing in the video: Ned Overend, Martha Kennedy, John Tomac, Julia Ingersoll, Tinker Juarez and Kevin Norton.
By today’s standards, “The Great Mountain Biking Video” would certainly have benefited from better camera gear, editing transitions and sound track. But, as they say, there’s no faking the ‘80’s. And since imitation is the best form of flattery, we are flattered every day we wander onto Youtube and see the latest “great mountain biking” video that someone has posted.
