Millions of years ago, the land that is now Anza Borrego Desert State Park sat beneath an ancient sea. Over time, layers of sand, silt, and mud settled on the seafloor, eventually becoming the soft sandstone that makes up much of the park today.

After the sea receded and the landscape was uplifted by tectonic forces, nature got to work. During rare but powerful desert storms, flash floods rushed through small cracks in the rock, slowly carving them deeper and narrower over thousands of years. That’s how these incredible slot canyons were formed.

Even today, they’re still evolving. A single flash flood can reshape the canyon walls in just minutes, making every visit a little different from the last.

⚠️ Despite the dry conditions, never enter a slot canyon if rain is in the forecast. A storm many miles away can send a powerful wall of water through the canyon with little warning.

Standing here is like walking through the floor of an ancient sea, where millions of years of Earth’s history are carved into every wall.

A Vietnam-era Huey helicopter sits on top of a gas station in Jacumba… and yes, it’s real. 🚁
