When I was a child playing junior league football our coach would tell us โGotta score three to get oneโ. There were only two Black teams in the league and we were in different divisions. All the other teams and referees were White. Whenever we would score there would be a penalty. We literally had to score three times for every score. We were kids. That lesson fuels my life. I know that I will not be recognized in this society if Iโm not stellar beyond denial. It takes a lot of energy lifting this extra placed on me simply because of my race. I look at art history books and museums and they present only one story. I seek to be beyond denial. I seek excellence. My aspirations are greater than just the fight. Fortunately my parents and family raised me to never fold and to pursue my dreams. The fight will never absorb all of me. My ambitions are greater than that.

Ted Washington is an artist, author, poet and reluctant businessman. He now lives in San Diego, after spending time as an apprentice draftsman for a beer brewery in St. Louis, an Internal Revenue Service employee in Springfield, MO, a retail sales representative in Denver, CO, and temporarily homeless vagabond turned baker on the beaches of Venice, CA. Ted is the founder of Puna Press and the performance group Pruitt Igoe. Pruitt Igoe was awarded a Synergy Foundation grant and performed in Harlem, New York City. Ted Washington won the BRAND 37 purchase award, with the Glendale Library acquiring one of his artworks for their permanent collection.
