The reason Local 495 was organized was to meet the needs of local productions for IA crew members. Our rates were reasonable compared to LA rates, really crew wages were an incentive to film here. Joining was easy, when productions were active. Productions were allowed to hire off the streets, if needed. Also, I had a database of almost 2000 people who had worked productions here. Many LA members came down & agreed to work as locals, just to get a job. If on a production, all you had to do was turn in an app, & and pay a fee, $600, I think. Now with the decline of the industry, many went on to secure LA cards to continue working on film. When 495 declined, they were assimilated by local 122. But the contract is the same. Hear of a production, go to the set & see if you can get hired. If you do you are in. Nobody from 495 & 122 wanted to merge, but the international union went behind every one's back, so it is what it is.
