Former San Diego news reporter Jonathan Horn has published a memoir about his unique career path in the local news media. In his book, "One City, One Shot," Jon explains how he worked his way up from earning $40 per article at a small weekly newspaper to reporting for the Union-Tribune and ultimately on-air at ABC-10News.

Horn wrote the memoir with journalism students and early-career reporters in mind, in hopes of providing an example of a career path that doesn't involve bouncing from town to town. He also shares behind-the-scenes stories of reporting at each outlet and how he knew when it was time to leave the industry and accept a position as a government PIO. The book is available as an e-book and paperback on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FCCH8LZ5

It may be April, but we are in the midst of the '25 awards season! Before you submit your entries, we have another opportunity for you. We are seeking more volunteers to help us wrap up the judging of the Press Club of Long Island contest. PCLI is our official judging partner this year, which means their folks will be judging your entries later this summer. Think of your part as building some good awards karma for yourself. Plus, it is always fun to see the type of work our peers are doing in other markets.

Can you help us?????

Even a single category of judging helps us reach our goal and meet our deadline, which is coming up Wednesday, April 23 at midnight. If you have time between now and the end of Wednesday, please email our new executive director Albert Fulcher at [email protected]. He will get you the instructions you need to dive in.

And if you have given time to help us already, thanks so much. We are grateful for your support!

Bridging Divides and Staying Sane: Strategies for Fruitful Political Interactions & Maintaining Equilibrium

The San Diego Press Club will present “Bridging Divides and Staying Sane: Strategies for Fruitful Political Interactions & Maintaining Equilibrium,” an in-person panel discussion from 7-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at San Diego City College.

The event is free for SDPC members, with non-members welcome to join for a $10 donation. Parking is also included for all attendees. All are invited afterward to continue the discussion at Punch Bowl Social, just a short walk from campus. Please note -- seats are limited for this special event!

In this time of shifting media landscapes, journalists need strategies to communicate effectively with all sides of the political divide and stay sane. This live panel discussion will address how to maintain balance in this challenging time.
Panelists will include:

* Dr. Gina Simmons Schneider, a licensed psychotherapist, executive coach, corporate trainer, and author of the award-winning book Frazzlebrain. She is also a coping skills expert with over 25 years of experience helping people manage emotions and conflicts. Dr. Schneider blogs for Psychology Today and writes the award-winning Manage Anger Daily blog. She has also blogged for Forbes and Women in Crime Ink, which the Wall Street Journal named a “blog worth reading.”

* Brady Young, an Alliance Co-Chair and Lead Event Organizer for Braver Angels, a nonprofit focused on depolarizing American politics. Along with Co-Chair Kelly Simmons, Brady facilitates discussions and events in San Diego to foster understanding across political divides. He also organizes online workshops and debates, engaging participants nationwide in conversations about key political issues. Brady works in Academic Affairs and Curriculum Development at the Franciscan School of Theology at the University of San Diego.

* Albert H. Fulcher, a longtime managing editor, editor, freelance writer and photographer. Fulcher has dedicated over 10 years of service to the San Diego Press Club as a board member and past president.

The panel is part of the Press Club’s longstanding “Nuts & Bolts” educational series, which is part of the Press Club’s professional development program.
