Video Editing Is All About Psychology Of People.

07/14/2026

I spent hours editing a video last month, and I did everything "right."
Fast cuts. Loud background music. Text popping up every single second.
I thought, "This is exactly what keeps people watching."
But my retention graph completely flatlined. People were scrolling away after just 10 seconds. I felt exhausted and completely defeated.
Out of pure frustration, I went back into the timeline. I deleted all the background music. I removed the fast, flashy clips.
Instead, I did the unthinkable. I left the screen completely black for four whole seconds. Just a deep voice speaking in the dark.
Then... BOOM.
A heavy sound effect and a single, powerful image.
It felt so wrong. It broke every editing rule I had ever learned. But I posted it anyway.
The result? The retention skyrocketed. Viewers were absolutely hooked.
I sat there staring at the screen, wondering, why did this actually work?
Then I learned about a concept called "Expectancy Violation Theory."
As humans, our brains are wired to predict what happens next. When we see the same loud, fast edits everywhere, our brains go on autopilot. We get bored. We swipe away.
But when you suddenly break that pattern—when you give someone total silence instead of noise—the brain wakes up. It panics just a little bit. It HAS to know what happens next.
I realized we don't need more noise to hold attention. Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is break the pattern and give them silence.
Where else do we blindly follow the "rules" just because everyone else is doing it?
