Personal choices have shaped our lives. Some were made too fast, without time to see the good and the bad. Certain things were dressed in bright colors and drew us like bees to nectar. We chose, we sighed, we cried. It was mere color and taste - not substance. Time teaches wisdom - or does it? Youth or age or circumstances plays little part. It is the lust that twists judgment and sets us up like clay ducks. This thing, that person, that situation - would make all things perfect? It is a personal choice, a path chosen and not easy to walk - sometimes impossible. ~ The white man builds big house, cost much money, like big cage, shut out sun, can never move, always sick. ~

A lady of much wisdom has often remarked, "If you want to feel well all the time and feel alive, you have to keep the rhythm in your body." Rhythm, the gentle, easy flow of life. Ordinarily we think of keeping time with music when we think of rhythm. The very idea of allowing one's self the frivolity of feeling rhythm - and such a wonderful idea! There is an underlying rhythm to all of living. Wherever there is life, there is that pulsating rhythm that has everything on the move. There is harmony and there is a subtle smoothness to finding one's own pace. When we get out of step and resist that pace, we have "one of those days" when everything goes wrong. William Shakespeare wrote, "The man that hath no music in himself, nor is not moved with concord of sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils; the motions of his spirit are dull as night, and his affections dark as Erebus. Let no such man be trusted."

Secretly, we are afraid others will see what we know is true - that we don't have what it takes. The Cherokee says we are not u wo hi yu - we lack confidence and we suspect others can see it. But no one can do everything - and, even if they can, they seldom do it. What we fear, others fear. Our needs are others' needs. Our thoughts, our worries, though hidden from view, are not in the heart of just one person - but all. There's no need for a stumbling block. We may not be superhuman but we are spirit, and spirit has no limits. Spirit is not dwarfed by circumstances. It has all power and makes us worthy. ~ He has done nothing for which an Indian ought to be ashamed. ~

First things and first times....the newness of the present moment holds such a breath of youth, such a challenge, there are moments in everyone's life they wish they could relive. Just to recall those times when the newness, the memory of first things were beautiful and exciting. But life never stands still. It moves forward or it decays. It cannot hold on to the past in any way. If the newness of first things has not grown into finer and more beautiful moments, then it cannot go on. Everyone can recall something so dear that it becomes new again just by thinking about it. Courage, love, joy, contentment, all these can call to mind the special moments that were beginnings of new eras, new times in living. The scales of life tip this way and that to make those times full of meaning and sometimes vividly painful. And then sometimes it takes a season to mend the heart and spirit. When they are ready, the experience of new times and new beginnings and first things will bloom once more and the youthful challenge again enchants.

How can we know another man's heart or true desire? We're not even sure about our own. So many potent suggestions have been made to us that we question our own hearts. If we can understand who we are, we will know others. To identify something valuable in another person is to know it in ourselves. The Tsalagi calls it intuitive or perceptive - to know something without tangible evidence. The miracle is in finding something good in someone else and realizing we have to have it in us to be able to recognize it. One who never has a good word or a good thought for anyone reveals his terrible need. ~ Sentiment was against the Indian, that they could not be civilized....could not be educated....were somewhat like human beings....but not quite in line of human rights.... ~

SUN DANCE LODGE, Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, 1907. Many of the reservation"s 1,400 inhabitants had gathered for days of ritual and celebration. The Edward Curtis photo gave us a glimpse inside the lodge when few people were present. The camp was near Ashland, about 80 miles SW of Miles City, Montana. Each of the Northern Plains tribes performed a version of the Sun Dance ceremony lasting several days. Click to enlarge the view.

In 1878, Little Wolf and Dull Knife led bands of Cheyenne on a perilous trek of seven months and more than 1,000 miles from their incarceration camps in Oklahoma to their former hunting grounds where there were still buffalo. The survivors who reached southeastern Montana remained there. Prohibitions against photographing the Sun Dance came after cameras became more common. Before we can share with others, we must have something to share. And all of us do have something to give. Not material things, but we can share our peace and our love and our loyalty. Before we can share with others, there must be others with whom to share. For if we are selfish and self-centered enough, we will never have to worry about sharing anything. We will be alone. Before we can expect others to share with us, we must be capable of accepting. We must be worthy of others who desire to share with us; we must deserve their love. Before the two of us can ever find anything in this world of mutual interest, we must have enough concern and enough love to feel a need within to produce something good enough to offer; not only to others, but to ourselves. If we have abused our own nature with thoughts of bitterness, harboring painful experiences, self-condemnation for little progress regardless of circumstances, then we have nothing to offer. The French philosopher Achille Poincelot once said, "Some people think that all the world should share their misfortunes, though they do not share in the sufferings of anyone else."

KICKS IRON, 1905, Frank Bennett Fiske"s most famous portrait. Fiske"s studio was at Fort Yates on the Standing Rock Reservation, located south of Bismarck, ND. Using Photoshop, I sharpened the image and brightened the shadows to reveal a bit more detail. Click or stretch image for a clearer view.

In June of 1881, the Sioux who had earlier surrendered to Col. Nelson Miles at Fort Keogh (in SE Montana) were transported by five steamboats to the Standing Rock Reservation. Records are imprecise, but perhaps 1,700 to as many as 3,000 Sioux were forcibly relocated. This created a passenger count higher than the number passing through the port of New York on the same day. Fiske’s portraits were published in “The Standing Rock Portraits.” Text and digital sharpening of an already superb image by Gary Coffrin.
