Heard a racket on the deck. Looked down and this Chipping Sparrow fledgling hopped on my finger and started giving me an earful.

Wings flapping, mouth open, full of opinions for a bird that left the nest yesterday. I’m pretty sure he was telling me to get off his boat.

Set him back down and he kept yelling at me from the railing. Mom was nearby. No rescue needed — just a teenager with a lot to say.

What’s the sassiest fledgling you’ve run into?

A beautiful little moment from Himachal, India.

I came across this pair of Red-Billed Blue Magpies in Chakki Modh, and it was hard not to stop and admire them for a while. The colors, the long tail feathers, and the way they perched together made the whole scene feel almost unreal.

Some birds don’t just pass by — they make you pause.

There’s something peaceful about seeing a pair like this out in nature, just sharing the same branch and adding a little color to the day. Moments like this are such a simple reminder of how much beauty is out there when you slow down long enough to notice it.

Have you ever seen Red-Billed Blue Magpies in person, or do you have another bird that always catches your eye?

100 miles offshore in the Gulf. This exhausted juvenile Northern Rough-winged Swallow picked my lap to crash.

Slept for hours, eyes closed, while we sailed. Offered water. Let him rest. Around dusk he took off toward the lights of Naples.

Some days the ocean makes you feel small. Other days it trusts you with something smaller.

My wife texted me that one of the red-tailed hawks was “in the pool,” and for a second my heart dropped.

We’ve had four of them hanging around the trees this spring, so I was already picturing some kind of rescue situation before I even opened the photo.

Then the picture came through… and there it was, just floating around like it had booked the pool for the afternoon.

I went from worried to laughing pretty fast. Sometimes wildlife gives you a little scare first, then turns it into the best backyard moment of the day.

Have you ever had a wild animal show up in your yard acting like it owned the place?

Y’all ever seen a rat working the bird feeder like he pays the seed bill?

I didn’t know they did that either. Caught this guy climbing the pole at dusk, helping himself to the sunflower mix. Guess word got out at the rodent dinner table that I run an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Looks like I’m switching to a baffle and bringing the feeder in at night. The birds get breakfast, not the rats.

What’s the wildest “not-a-bird” you’ve caught on your feeder?

Well… Tractor Supply said “Barred Rock.” Turns out it’s a Barred Owl.

Found this guy grounded and out of sorts. Got him in a quiet tote for now. He’s federally protected, so I’m getting him to a licensed wildlife rehabber to check for injuries.

Reminder: If you find a wild raptor, don’t try to keep or feed it. Call a rehabber. They know what to do.

Hope this barred beauty gets back to the woods soon.

Check out this cute little couple. 😍

I saw these two cardinals together and had to stop for a second. There’s just something sweet about seeing them side by side, especially knowing cardinals are often said to stay with the same mate for life.

It makes a simple backyard moment feel a little more special.

Nature has a quiet way of reminding us that love can show up in the smallest places — even in the grass, under the evening light, with two little birds just staying close.

Have you ever spotted a pair of cardinals like this in your yard?

This little chipping sparrow sat there watching me eat baked beans and toast like it was waiting for a plate of its own.

I almost felt bad not sharing, but with all the maple syrup in the beans, I figured this tiny visitor probably didn’t need that kind of breakfast.

It stayed close, looking curious and calm, like it knew exactly what it was doing. Just a simple little moment near Sainte-Adèle, QuÊbec, but it made the whole morning feel sweeter.

Sometimes the smallest backyard visitors have the biggest personality.

Have you ever had a wild bird sit nearby like it was judging your breakfast?

I thought cleaning the chicken coop every other day would be enough… but the flies clearly had other plans.

The coop stays pretty clean, the chickens are doing fine, and I try to stay on top of it before anything gets too messy. But somehow, the flies still show up like they were invited.

It’s one of those small homestead problems that gets frustrating because you’re already doing the work, but it still doesn’t feel like enough.

I know chickens come with dirt, feed, water, and all the normal backyard mess, but I’d really like to keep the flies under control without making the coop unsafe for them.

What has actually worked for you around a chicken coop — better bedding, traps, herbs, lime, fans, or something else?

I have no idea what kind of bird this was, but it was honestly awesome to see.

It was sitting right there on my driveway when I pulled up, and instead of flying away, it just stayed close and hopped around the stump for a few minutes like it owned the place.

It was about a foot and a half tall with a long skinny beak, and I couldn’t stop watching it. Sometimes the most random little wildlife moments end up being the coolest part of the day.

Does anyone know what type of bird this might be?
