This masonry heater is my primary heat source at 9000 ft in Colorado. Most of my off-grid home is straw bale with post and beam construction. (The 2nd floor loft is conventional frame.) The heater was built by a highly skilled mason (not me) in 2011. We recovered the used brick from a house being remodelled in Boulder, CO, which had just turned 100 years old. I fire the heater once or twice a day most days November through April. I enjoy seeing the variety of nice stove installations on this FB page. So many cozy homes and cabins.
I've added a photo of the other side, which faces the kitchen. There is a bake oven which, unless it is very cold and cloudy outside, spends much of the winter in the range of 225 to 350F (107 to 177C). Those temperatures are.good.for.stews and potatoes. This view also shows the chimney/pipe, which some people have asked about.
