For this video, we are still in Guatemala, where a 20-mile launch ride downriver turned into a tuktuk tour through Livingston, a hidden beach with no tourists, a swim in the Caribbean Sea, an amazing local lunch, a few very well-fed stray dogs and a side of Guatemala we never would have found on our own.

Our new video is live!

We’re finally revealing which lithium batteries are going into Tangaroa — and talking about why the internet’s “lithium is safe” vs. “lithium is dangerous” argument misses the point.

With over 400 kWh going into our 78-foot aluminum yacht, this decision is not just about picking a battery. It is about designing the whole system properly.

Hybrid-electric used to feel like something happening somewhere else.

Cars. Buses. Maybe experimental equipment.

And then one day you look around and realize it isn’t “future technology” anymore.

We’re designing it into Tangaroa.

The more we’ve worked through that system, the more I’ve realized how difficult it is to find somebody who explains hybrid-electric from the beginning without either oversimplifying it or turning it into engineering school.

I’ve been working on something around that.

On Valentine's Day, which bird flew overhead was believed to predict who a woman would end up marrying.

Old superstition, and a strangely specific one: if a woman spotted a robin flying overhead on Valentine's Day, she was destined to marry a sailor.

See a sparrow instead? You'd marry a poor man — but be happy.

See a goldfinch? You'd marry a rich man. Happiness, though, was never part of that deal.

Blunt way to put it, but there's something almost honest about a superstition that admits money doesn't guarantee happiness, while a broke sailor apparently comes with it guaranteed.

Glad we didn't have to leave this one up to a bird.

Meet Stella and Portia.

Two 2012 Dodge Cummins 6.7L common rail engines, born in a Dodge truck, high performance, and only 500 nm on each since they went into Tangaroa. We pulled them during our hybrid-electric repower — not because anything's wrong with them, we just don't need them anymore.

$17,500 CAD each (roughly $12,625 USD). Since they started life in a truck, they're a natural fit for a truck repower or diesel swap. Vancouver, BC — local pickup or we can talk shipping.

We go through a lot of audio equipment on this boat, and this time I can't even blame Blaine.

Our DJI microphone went through the washing machine. All the way through. My fault, no one else's.

Here's the funny part though — that mic has a magnet in it, and when it hit the dryer, it stuck straight to the side of the drum. The magnet backing survived everything else that killed the mic, and now it just lives there, collecting loose coins and whatever else falls out of our pockets.

RIP to another piece of gear. Add it to the list.

Some people hear silence and immediately reach for their phone.

Boaters know better.

Sometimes the best part of being on the water is when the engine is off, the notifications are gone, and the only thing on the schedule is… nothing.
