Control a Samsung Smart Oven With an LG App – Yes You Can, Soon!

Thanks to Home Connectivity Standards Alliance, smart appliances from multiple brands will be talking to each other. The alliance is a consortium of more than a dozen appliance manufacturers, including Samsung, Trane, Electrolux, LG and Resideo. This new standard aims to ensure large smart appliances from different brands work in tandem to deliver convenience to consumers and to achieve energy saving goals.

The standard is designed to ensure costly and large smart home appliances (kitchen, laundry, and HVAC systems, for example) work together so consumers only need one app for everything. The alliance’s operating principal is “any app to any device” and initially “focuses on the 25 percent of features than 80 percent of people use,” according to HCA president and board chairman Yoon Ho Choi.

These classes of appliance manufactures are very expensive and can last for many years so the organization designed its standard so that legacy smart appliances can be upgraded to the standard via firmware updates. Consumers won’t need to worry about replacing products they might have purchased.

The HCA’s plan is designed to complement rather than compete with the Matter standard. Matter connects compatible devices and systems with one another making them secure, reliable and seamless to use. HCA’s focus is on cloud-to-cloud communications.

Jury is Out Whether Consumers Want Smart Appliances Functionality

It is not surprise that today’s smart appliances are more convenient. Smart refrigerators alert when a door is open, interior cameras let you know what is needed and they notify you when the water filter needs changing. Smart washers and dishwashers help with detergent and water levels and washing/drying sessions are finished. Smart ranges and microwaves scan items and automatically set the proper cooking time/temperature. Retailers recommend smart appliances to their customers as manufacturers and retailers have found these operational and informative smarts compelling

Smart appliances are in a separate category and are not going away. Consumers increasingly expect their major household products to integrate with other smart devices as the technology helps them perform everyday tasks more efficiently.

Smart appliance sale statistics show a small interest rather than full-fledged adoption enthusiasm. According to IDC, in 2021 shipments smart appliances reached 18 million units in the U.S. which is 30% YoY increase and representing only 3.7% of the total market.

For a technician the best value is the ability to remotely diagnose the smart appliance if something fails. The ability to remotely diagnosis saves time and money for both the company and consumer.
Smart appliances are selling however the slow adoption could be due to consumers being unaware of appliance technology. They also sold at a price premium. To cost-conscious consumers, the labor-savings needs to be long term benefit.

Smart appliances will continue to become smarter and cheaper however the future will be to offer the right product at a price consumers will purchase. Manufacturers will need to meet customer needs to get more adoption.

Employee Handbooks Help to Limit Employer Liability and Lawsuits

Homer servicers need to protect their company from liability in daily operations. Employers can face liability for any action committed by workers and opens the door to all types of claims. Do you have comprehensive risk management strategies and employee policies in place?

A well-written handbook will create a strong, positive company when policies are clearly defined and implemented. Employees should be aware specific protocols and/or procedures, but the real purpose of a handbook is to provide a clear picture of the business to help mitigate risk and to protect your business with acceptable employee conduct.

Defining employment scope

An employee handbook can prevent liability which is particularly important when duties carry a high risk of liability. Make sure your handbook clearly states company policies, job duties and acceptable business conduct.

Enforcing employment scope of work

To fully access the protections of a written employment policy, the employer must actually enforce that policy. A human resources department is effective to achieve this. Small business that cannot hire a full-time HR person is still accountable for enforcing employment policies. When creating written employment policies, consider the areas in which your business will face the greatest liability risks.

To help your business, a clearly defined employee handbook with policies that are enforced in needed.

Gas Disagreements Boil in Washington

Climate advocates in the US has been looking to ban gas stoves to help make the case for phasing out fossil fuels. Gas stoves release carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide which can increase the risk of respiratory damage. This has sparked disagreements in Washington over how to deal with the health risks which led a federal safety agency to look into.

A commissioner for Consumer Product Safety Commission told Bloomberg that a gas stove ban was on the table. This set a firestorm in Washington because some feel federal government has no business telling families how to cook.

The gas industry met faced opposition campaign by the gas industry and their allies in state legislatures. At least 20 have enacted laws that prohibit local governments from restricting fossil fuels in buildings.

Burning gas releases carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde, which increase the risk of respiratory damage. A recent study found secondhand smoke is a risk for childhood as cooking on a gas stove may affect asthma.

The study, published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, attributed 12.7% of childhood asthma cases in the US to air pollutants from gas stoves. The issue that it's bad for the climate, than it must be bad for your health led to research a few years ago. The study raised awareness and possible opened the eyes policymakers to do something.

It has recently clarified the federal safety agency is not looking to ban gas stoves but is not looking to ban gas stoves but is considering other ways to reduce the hazards.

There are states and cities which don’t require gas stoves to be vented outdoors, which is different than appliances like furnaces and water heaters. Exhaust hoods and fans aren't guaranteed to clean the air, and people might not always use them.

Some feel federal agencies should step up oversight since the Environmental Protection Agency doesn't regulate indoor air quality, however it could issue nonbinding guidance that helps influence state and local officials who update building codes.
