In 1975, photographer Stanley Forman captured the harrowing moment during a building fire in Boston when a fire escape collapsed. The image, titled "Fire on Marlborough Street," shows 19-year-old Diana Bryant and her 2-year-old goddaughter Tiare Jones falling from the fifth-floor fire escape as they were about to climb onto a fire truck ladder. Although Bryant died from her injuries, the young child survived. Awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1976 for spot news photography, this powerful photo not only memorialized a tragic event but also spurred improvements in fire escape safety regulations.

In 1989, Yumi Tanaka discovered a shoe floating in the toilet bowl. Investigating further, she found a man’s body in the sewer tank outside. The man appeared to have squeezed through a 14-inch septic opening.

It was later determined that he had entered the waste tank, likely attempting to peer up the toilet when women were using it. Though many of the locals believed this was unlikely.

Tom Brown, a 79-year-old retired chemical engineer from Clemmons, North Carolina, has spent over 20 years tracking down rare, nearly extinct Appalachian apple varieties. Since 1998, he has revived over 1,200 heirloom apple types by scouring maps, orchards, and historical records to rediscover long-lost varieties like Brushy Mountain Limbertwig and Mule Face.

He grafts these rediscovered apples in his own orchard and sells them affordably to encourage preservation. Despite the challenges, he finds joy in saving these historic apples and keeping the region’s agricultural heritage alive.
