For many years, my work happened in classrooms, training rooms, organizations and professional spaces.

But I have always believed that there are things about culture that people understand differently when they are given the opportunity to experience them for themselves.

That is why cultural immersion became such an important part of my work.

There is something powerful about taking people out of their familiar environment and allowing them to encounter another culture with curiosity.

Suddenly, the conversations become different. People begin noticing things they would normally overlook. They ask better questions. They become aware of assumptions they did not even realize they had.

And sometimes, they begin to understand themselves differently too.

That is the part of cultural intelligence that excites me. It is not simply about knowing that cultures are different.

It is about developing the awareness and flexibility to navigate those differences in real life, whether you are leading a team, working with international colleagues, building relationships or simply trying to understand someone whose experience is different from yours.

This is the kind of work I will continue bringing into the Connection Catalyst Challenge.

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐈𝐒 “𝐍𝐎𝐑𝐌𝐀𝐋”?
One of the most interesting questions you can ask when working across cultures is simply, “What do I consider normal, and where did that idea of normal come from?”

We often move through the world assuming that our way of communicating, greeting, leading, eating, working or building relationships is simply the natural way to do things.

It can take an encounter with another culture to make us realize that what we call normal is often just what is familiar to us.

I have watched this realization happen many times during cultural immersion experiences.

Someone encounters a different way of doing something and their first reaction is often, “That's strange.” Then the questions begin.

Why do they do it this way? What does it mean to them? What history or values shaped this practice? And slowly, judgment can give way to understanding.

That shift is at the heart of cultural intelligence. It does not require us to abandon our own culture or agree with every cultural practice we encounter. It asks us to become aware enough to understand before we judge.

𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐖𝐀𝐒𝐍'𝐓 𝐉𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐀 𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐏
When I look at photographs from our cultural immersion experiences, I don't only see the places we visited.

I remember the conversations, the questions, the moments when someone suddenly realized that the way they had understood something was not the only way to understand it.

That is what makes cultural immersion so meaningful to me. We are not simply travelling to take photographs or tick another destination off a list. We are entering another cultural environment with the intention to learn, observe, interact and understand.

Sometimes the most important lesson comes from a very ordinary moment: a conversation with someone, a shared meal, watching how people interact, or noticing how differently an everyday activity is approached.

Those moments can challenge our assumptions in ways that are difficult to replicate in a classroom.

I believe that when we experience culture with openness and humility, we return with more than memories. We return with a wider perspective and, hopefully, a greater capacity to connect with people who are different from us.

This is part of the philosophy behind my work and something we will continue exploring in the next Connection Catalyst Challenge.

A leader once told me that their multicultural team had a communication problem.

People were misunderstanding one another, meetings were becoming frustrating and some team members had started withdrawing from conversations.

But when you look more closely at situations like this, you often discover that communication is only the surface of the problem.
Underneath it may be different expectations about leadership, different approaches to disagreement, different attitudes toward hierarchy, different ways of giving feedback or different ideas about what it means to participate in a team.

This is why multicultural teams need more than communication skills. They need cultural intelligence.

When people understand that their colleagues may be interpreting the same situation through a different cultural lens, they become better equipped to ask questions, adapt their approach and work through differences without immediately turning those differences into personal conflicts.

I have seen how much can change when people stop asking, “Why are they behaving like this?” and begin asking, “What might I be missing?”

Some of the most powerful lessons about culture do not happen in a classroom.

They happen when you find yourself somewhere unfamiliar, surrounded by people whose everyday experiences may be very different from yours, and you have to slow down enough to observe, listen and learn.

That is one of the reasons cultural immersion has always been important to me. When I take people into different cultural environments, the goal is not simply to show them a new place. It is to give them an opportunity to experience culture in a way that books and presentations cannot always capture. You meet people.

You ask questions. You observe how things are done. You discover that something you considered completely normal is not necessarily normal everywhere.

These experiences often leave people with more than memories. They leave them with questions about their own assumptions, their communication and the way they relate to people who are different from them.

For me, that is where some of the deepest cultural learning begins.
