Adamma's Tragic Tale of Sacrifice and Betrayal.
I still remember the day Adamma's life began to unravel.
Growing up in a small town in Nigeria, she was groomed by her parents to be the breadwinner of the family. From a young age, she was pushed to work tirelessly, bringing home money without any regard for how she raised it.
Her parents didn't care; all they wanted was the financial security she provided. As Adamma grew older, she became increasingly successful. She built a thriving business, amassed properties, and even helped her family members set up their own ventures.
But despite her success, her parents still controlled every aspect of her life.
"Nne na nna bụ ndị na-akụziri ụmụ ha ihe" (Parents are teachers to their children”). They made decisions on her behalf, including who she should marry.
One man, in particular, had been instrumental in Adamma's rise to success. He was her mentor, her guide, and her benefactor. But when he proposed marriage, Adamma's parents rejected him outright, citing reasons that made no sense to her. Adamma, bound by her obedience to her parents, reluctantly refused his proposal.
As time went on, Adamma's suitors dwindled. Her parents, who'd grown accustomed to living off her wealth, began to insult and humiliate her. They'd mock her for being unmarried, for not having children, and for not being "good enough."
Adamma, once full of life and ambition, began to withdraw into herself. "Onye kwe, Chi ya ekwe" (When a person agrees, their Chi agrees").
And then, the unthinkable happened. Adamma was diagnosed with cancer. But she refused to share the news with anyone, not even her family. She was determined to fight the disease on her own. It progressed rapidly, and soon Adamma was bedridden. She knew her time was running out.
The day Adamma passed away, her family was shocked. They had no idea about her illness. All they knew was that they'd lost their meal ticket.
As they mourned her passing, they began to fight over her properties. Her body was still in the mortuary, unburied, while her family squabbled over her wealth.
Sometimes, the price of sacrifice can be too high. Adamma's life was a testament to the devastating consequences of prioritizing material wealth over emotional well-being.
Take care of yourself while caring for others. “Ekwusam” (I am done talking)
