The Future of Tiny Telephone San Francisco


Hello! As some of you may have heard, the property that Tiny Telephone SF sits upon is scheduled to be developed. We knew this would eventually happen when we initially signed the lease. I want to be clear: we are not getting displaced by our landlords. We've been renting our space at below market rate for 22 years, and our landlords, the Goode Family, have shielded us and many of the other tenants from the brutalities of San Francisco commercial real estate. I met Marilyn Goode in 1992 when she rented me the space that eventually became TT. She could have easily made more money renting to anyone else, but she supported the studio then and now. 


For many years now, Tiny Telephone SF has found it increasingly difficult to make ends meet. That we've survived running an unsubsidized arts business for 22 years in SF is a miracle. With much regret I notified our landlord last month that we planned to close next spring. They responded by offering to further reduce our rent and to forgo some of the back rent we currently owe. With their continued help we hope to stay in business through next spring and hopefully up until the property is developed.

TTOakland has no plans to close and our business there is very stable.


We are so thankful for all of the artists who have worked and recorded here. We've had a tremendous run, and the impact of the studio in SF and elsewhere has been improbable to say the least.

So, while we are still here (which we hope will be for a few more years) let's celebrate all of the amazing engineers, producers, and session musicians that work at TTSF and make some records! We'll keep you up to date with any news that comes our way!!!

Summer Touring is here!! I'm doing an Undertow Music Collective tour in the Southwest. We've got Austin (X2), Houston, OKC, LA, Phoenix, Dallas, San Diego, and tons of places I've never played before: Plano, San Antonio, El Paso, Lubbock, Flagstaff, and Albuquerque. Playing a new city is maybe my favorite part of touring and the SW IS UNSTOPPABLE. I will hike and swim and I will eat excellent food. Ticket link is below. Hello, wonderful humans - I need your help!! Due to the double whammy of a sizable rent increase ($4k/month!) at Tiny Telephone SF plus some unforeseen studio construction and repairs, I need to borrow some money!! The loan will be interest bearing and securitized. My credit score is 816, which is like a million considering I'm a self-employed musician. "Spectral Dawn" is a hymn to those who have disappeared into the ether: the lost loves, the obsessions, the dead. They've slipped through a trap door and are not accessible. The remaining fragments of memory and experience are comforting and damaging at the same time.

"Spectral Dawn," the 3rd single from The Cedars was just posted on BrooklynVegan I LOVE THIS SONG. Produced by Jamie Riotto and Robert Shelton. Vocals by the brilliant Samantha Perez and the amazing Jenny Gillespie Mason. This song was written during peak sadness and it solved something broken in my brain.

Cooper Kenward directed a mini-doc about recording The Cedars, my forthcoming album, and I absolutely love it. I think he perfectly captured the psychologically compromised place we found ourselves in while making this record. It was shot in Tiny Telephone Oakland and San Francisco. Starring Jamie Riotto, Robert Shelton, Jason Slota, and Andrew Maguire. Thank you to Native Cat Recordings for making this happen!!!!
