The Day America Nuked Japan's Surviving Fleet in a Single Lagoon

July 1946. The war is over. What's left of Japan's navy — plus dozens of captured and surplus American ships — is anchored in the lagoon at Bikini Atoll. No crews. No engines running. Just hulls lined up in the Pacific sun for an experiment nobody in history has ever run. The question is simple and terrifying: what does a nuclear weapon do to a fleet? The first bomb drops from altitude. The second is detonated underwater. The ships closest to the blast are vaporized or sent to the bottom immediately. The ones further out are left radioactive — too contaminated to board, too dangerous to salvage, too hot to touch for years. The target fleet includes the Nagato — Yamamoto's flagship, the ship from whose bridge he launched the Pearl Harbor attack. She survives the air burst. The underwater blast sends her to the bottom four days later. The navy that started the Pacific War ends it at the bottom of a lagoon in a nuclear test.
