N Judah Streetcars — San Francisco (November 23, 1975).

MUNI trains running the N Judah line in 1975 show the system adapting to modern needs while still honoring old streetcar routes. These trains linked the Sunset District to downtown, giving thousands a reliable daily path across the city’s shifting landscape. Photographs from this era catch San Francisco in transition: population changes, new urban planning ideas, and tightening budgets, all while the city held onto its transit identity. Riders stood with newspapers tucked under their arms, breathing steaming cold morning air. The N line always felt like a spine running east to west, holding the city together. When I see this image, I imagine the familiar screech of steel wheels rounding tight corners toward the Inner Sunset.

District 4 Supervisor Alan Wong announced that he plans to sign on to a 2026 ballot measure that would let San Franciscans decide on the future of the Great Highway for the second time in a year.

The ballot measure would be a “compromise,” Wong said, to bring cars back on the road during the week and keep it car-free on the weekends.

Wong called supporters and opponents of Sunset Dunes and let them know his decision before his announcement. He said he spent three weeks meeting with Sunset residents “across the political spectrum.”

A town hall on the future of Sunset Dunes, organized by the pro-park nonprofit, was slated to take place on Jan. 7. Over 200 people have registered to attend, according to the Friends of Sunset Dunes.
