It seems I am on an oldies tour, starting with the 40th anniversary screening of "The Times of Harvey Milk" at Sundance. A few weeks ago I was invited to the Bates Film Festival, a student run program at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, to show "Paragraph 175" (from 2000) as their opening night film. The Bates students were delightful, engaged, curious, thoughtful, and left me with a lot of hope. Last evening, the restored version of "Common Threads: Stories from the Quilt" played on the big screen at the San Rafael Film Center for the opening night of their pride series, with Jeffrey and me attending. It’s been 35 years since the film was released, and I hadn’t seen the film in a while; it took me back to that very tender time. A woman in the audience remarked how Bobby McFerrin’s magnificent all-vocal "Common Threads" score is "a salve for the soul"; how true, and thanks to Todd Boekelhide (who was in the audience last night with his young son) for making it all work. Milestone Films and the Academy did a beautiful job with the "Common Threads" restoration. Next stop, June 26th I’ll be appearing with "Word Is Out"(1977) at the Sag Harbor Cinema, Sag Harbor, NY. Adds up to nearly 50 years of filmmaking. How lucky I’ve been to have collaborated with so many stellar human beings over these many years.
Happy pride one and all.
