What's the most important life lesson you've learned?

My son asked me this today and it sparked a great conversation. I'd love to hear what you've learned.

I have two.

1. Don't ignore your mental health, it's not going away.

2. Doing things to please other people will almost never please them and will almost always harm you.

"I did not have a fantasy about running away — I had something much more powerful: an appreciation of what freedom was, and the awareness that although I must have it soon in order to make it out of my childhood alive, I also must avoid having it too soon."

I thought healing would mean lying. I thought allowing myself to be helped would be falsifying documents that stated I was all right or had a happy life when I did not. I thought all I had going for me was my refusal to lie about my life, and I didn't want to give that up.

"What has been the impact of race, and racism, on African-Americans working in the theater world? How should that world change? Those questions have taken on renewed, impassioned life since the killing of George Floyd, the shooting deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor, and the nationwide protests over racial injustice that have followed."

A playwright, a director, an artistic director and an actor share their experiences — and prescriptions for change.

"This story is for those who feel their voice is unheard and for children, teenagers, and the adult who never had the chance to heal from their pain."

Ravishly presents an exclusive excerpt from Elephant, Natalie Rodriguez's provocative new YA novel.

"The very real fears black women have about giving birth are only compounded by the coronavirus pandemic and the fact that COVID-19 is yet another thing black people are at higher risk of dying from than other racial and ethnic groups."

This is a huge problem. And it’s a problem that could disproportionately affect black women.

"When in the grips of an eating disorder, your whole world is food and exercise and weight; there’s no space for s*x."

I’m in recovery from anorexia. I’m also learning how to have s*x again. The two have more in common than you think.

"Do we let our kids read/watch/listen to this stuff, or do we keep it off limits?"

To knowingly include stories with deeply problematic themes strikes me as just adding fuel to the fire.

When Marcia Trahan began watching true crime television, she did so in secret. She felt ashamed by her fascination with these violent stories, and how hungrily she consumed one gruesome tale after another. Only years later did she start to connect the dots between her true crime obsession and the series of invasive medical procedures that had left her feeling victimized and violated.

Part searingly honest memoir, part incisive cultural criticism, Mercy explores the appeal of true crime and the way so many of us live our whole lives bracing for an attack.

"The fact that you still email me, even though we haven’t talked in a year because you “didn’t want to get involved” and I never write you back, shows that you don’t respect that I am allowed space away from you."

Recently I went through another round of unfriending on Facebook. It keeps things tidy, the arguments thoughtful and my head from exploding. This time around I just got rid of any white person that felt passionate about "certain political topics," but wasn't showing up for people of color, as we wat...

When we tell our child that they are OK, or that they need to stop crying, or that life’s not fair, we are attempting to override what they are feeling and experiencing. Imagine you told someone, “I’m so sad right now because my cat died.” And they replied with, “Oh, you’re OK. You can always get a new cat. It’s not the end of the world.”

We can teach our children resilience, empathy, and compassion by modeling those behaviors. And most importantly, we stop gaslighting them.
