As the games close and scoreboards go dark, this year’s spring sports season extends past the accolades and matches: these athletes leave behind a tight-knit community forged through countless hours of practice, team-bonding events and competition.
Across nine varsity teams—Boys Lacrosse, Girls Lacrosse, Boys Tennis, Track and Field, Swimming, Badminton, Girls Softball and Boys Baseball—Lick-Wilmerding High School student-athletes spent this spring balancing competition with team culture, leadership and program-building. Competing in the Bay Counties League (BCL) West, these athletes played weekly schedules against other Bay Area high schools such as San Francisco University High School, Urban High School, Marin Academy, Convent & Stuart Hall and San Domenico.

At 8am on Sunday May 17 in downtown San Francisco, as tortillas filled the air, tennis shoes hit the ground—the 113th annual Bay to Breakers race had begun. What started in 1912 as a fun community activity meant to lift San Francisco’s morale after the devastating 1906 earthquake, is still boosting spirits today, only now with undoubtedly more wigs, tutus and people dressed as Power Rangers.

Fleets of friends were dressed as Waymos, a group reenacted the Bad Bunny half time show, two young men dressed as Sisyphus rolled an inflatable boulder through clusters of Disney princesses, onesie-ed sesame street characters and an almost unbelievable number of minions. The runners flowed from Embarcadero to Civic Center, and then came the infamous Hayes Street hill.

The steep climb mixed with the rare San Francisco sun beaming down made the crowded cafès and corner stores look tempting. But thanks to the live music, impromptu DJ sets, cheers echoing from apartment windows and the occasional spray of a water gun, the crowd heaved upwards.

Bay to Breakers turns the entire city into a celebration. For one day, running, dancing, cheering and laughing take over the streets. Everything feels alive.

Last Friday, May 1st, three Paper Tiger Reporters traveled to San Francisco City Hall—along with 25 reporters from 11 other student publications—to attend a roundtable to ask Mayor Daniel Lurie and his administration questions. While Mayor Lurie was unfortunately unable to attend, students were able to ask questions to his chief staff, including Dean Crispen and Alicia John-Baptiste. Thanks so much to and his team for this incredible opportunity! 📰🐯📝
