SoundCloud is reportedly negotiating with major labels, offering them an equity stake and per-play fees in exchange for being able to use their music. This means the service is about to copy YouTube’s licensing strategy.

Posts of the Month - Clyde Smith's blog "Launch Your Own Song of the Month Club" & "Record Clubs are Back: The Lesson for Indie Artists" by Chris Robley.

In his blog "Record Clubs are Back: The Lesson for Indie Artists", Chris Robley points out that "people love to discover new music according to some weekly or monthly schedule, and they also like to 'set in and forget it' when it comes to the WAY in which they discover artists and songs." He encourages musicians to take advantage of this to engage fans. One easy way he suggests is by starting a song of the month club.

Clyde Smith then takes it one step further in "Launch Your Own Song of the Month Club," by suggesting ways to get started creating your song of the month club. According the Smith, you could start with something as simple as a mailing list with a link to a download or to private tracks on YouTube or SoundCloud, or try something more complex like creating a password protected site.

So read these blogs, then get started engaging fans with your own song of the month club!

Bill Wilson explains how proper use of metadata can benefit an artist now and in the future. Wilson: "it’s extremely important that today’s artists understand how to develop and maintain their long-term digital archive"

Spending a little time archiving this information as it comes in will mean you are prepared when opportunities arise.

*There are 4 areas where metadata is valuable for artists
1) Ensuring metadata on MP3 files of your music contains the title, the artist, and the album name.
2) Studio Credits and Liner Notes
3) Images and Videos
