Target has expanded its grocery infrastructure with the opening of a $367 million food distribution center in Thornton, Colorado. Spanning 529,000 square feet, the newly launched facility is the largest food hub in the retailer's network and will supply 129 stores across 11 states, speeding up store replenishment times by up to two days.
The building is the first of its kind for the company to include integrated shipment consolidation capabilities. By grouping separate vendor deliveries into fully loaded outbound trucks, the network can lower regional freight costs and accelerate receiving times. Designed for complex cold chain management, the temperature-controlled hub features distinct storage layouts for frozen, fresh, and pantry goods, alongside 12 specialized banana-ripening rooms to manage fruit freshness before retail delivery.
