Gentry Women in Tech Virtual Series - Gentry Magazine

Three years ago, our team at Gentry launched our first-ever Women in Tech Conference highlighting dozens of powerful female founders, VCs, and C-Suite executives. The 300-person event was followed last July by another sold-out event. While we won’t be able to rekindle that in-person energy of the conference in 2020, our team has been hard at work to bring you this issue filled with the stories of fascinating innovators, social entrepreneurs, and trailblazers. We hope you will be inspired by their fascinating stories and we encourage you to join us for the inaugural Gentry Women in Tech Virtual Series launching on August 28, 2020.

How might one adopt a #pet with social distancing mandatory right now? Humane Society Silicon Valley pivoted quickly to Virtual Adoptions—a five-step process that begins with setting up a virtual appointment with a HSSV Adoption Counselor who will arrange a virtual video appointment to meet your potential pet matches. At the end of that appointment you may make arrangements to pick up your new pet within 24 hours. Now who is ready to adopt?

Silicon Valley Designer Sara Fraser Underscores the Importance of Functionality in Design Now - Gentry Magazine

“Like everyone, I have been working from home and having online meetings,” notes in-demand Sara Fraser Interior Design . “In a way it’s actually making many things more efficient and we are moving along quickly with decisions.” With three kids at home all remote schooling from the kitchen table, Fraser is keenly aware of the importance of design decisions for her clients. “Creating multiple spaces in the home that are flexible for work, entertaining, and just getting away are key,” she stresses.

Designer Linda Sullivan Reveals a Refresh Underway at a Favorite Space to Gather at Santana Row - Gentry Magazine

Vintage Wine Bar and its sister shop, Vintage Wine Merchants - Santana Row , are Santana Row staples—the wine bar’s iconic limestone façade also makes it the shopping center’s most photographed storefront. In talking to Linda Sullivan of Sullivan Design Studio about her refresh of Vintage Wine Bar, we aim to shine a light on a much-loved community space where we look forward to gathering again just as soon as the Bay Area’s restaurants and bars reopen.

In March, Twitch CEO Emmett Shear gave $1 million to his longtime friend Lenore Estrada, who typically heads Three Babes Bakeshop in San Francisco, to launch a new nonprofit. Estrada acted fast—indeed, faster than government aid could have—turning to SF New Deal full-time to partner with 43 restaurants, disperse that initial funding and more to small businesses, and dispense 120,000 meals and counting—in all of six weeks.

How Pamela Keith’s CuisineStyle Pivoted Overnight - Gentry Magazine

“I’m good, for being upside down,” Pamela Keith says over the phone from the Burlingame headquarters of CuisineStyle by Pamela Keith, the catering and party-planning company she has run for the past 17 years. While Keith has seen and survived economic downturns before, the arrival of COVID-19 and California’s subsequent stay-at-home order meant her business, which largely serves Silicon Valley corporate and wedding clientele, was on the brink of disappearing—overnight.

The New TheatreWorks Artistic Director Brings Experience, Enthusiasm to the Role - Gentry Magazine

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley Artistic Director Tim Bond likes a quote from John Steinbeck’s book Once There Was War: “The theatre is the only institution in the world that has been dying for four thousand years and has never succumbed. It requires tough and devoted people to keep it alive.” Bond’s faith in the enduring nature of the theater will be put to the test as he takes the helm of the highly regarded regional company during the recent pandemic crisis. He brings to the challenge an impressive background and training as well as the full support of the TheatreWorks company and its board.

06/05/2020

As the last week has unfolded, our hearts have hurt along with yours as the painful realities of racial, institutionalized injustice are—finally—becoming visible to the country en masse. We stand in solidarity and affirm that Black Lives Matter, starting right here in Silicon Valley, where many of the systemic inequities being passionately—and for the most part, peacefully, protested—are all too starkly apparent.

We must not squander this opportunity to come together and do better as individuals, as a publication, and as a community.

As former President Obama said in his June 3 virtual Town Hall of those taking to our streets and public spaces: “I hope that you also feel hopeful, even as you may feel angry, because you have the power to make things better and you have helped to make the entire country feel as if this is something that’s got to change. You’ve communicated a sense of urgency that is as powerful and as transformative as anything that I’ve seen in recent years.”

We at Gentry recognize that urgency and are committed to being part of the necessary change, of much-needed transformation. As an editorial platform, as content creators, we bear a particular responsibility. For 27 years, it has been Gentry’s mission to create stories and experiences that reflect, inspire, and connect the Silicon Valley community. And from this day forward:

We are listening intently, empathetically, and proactively to Black voices and perspectives.

We are asking ourselves hard, important questions about the space we occupy as a luxury lifestyle publication. If our community does not all share in the luxury of being pulled over by an officer without having to worry about our mortal safety, the luxury of not being followed in a retail shop, the luxury of access to opportunity, we cannot look away from that disparity.

We are making a formal commitment to do better. We must amplify BIPOC voices and provide a platform for their stories. We will further diversify our stable of contributing writers, photographers, and illustrators, as well as our Advisory Board. We will seek out more Black-, Latinx-, and Indigenous-owned businesses and community leaders to feature on our pages.

On the June cover you will find new TheatreWorks Artistic Director Tim Bond. We hope you’ll be as fascinated by his creative journey and hopes for the venerable local theater organization’s next chapter, as we were when we started working on the story several months ago (Link in Bio). We would love to hear from you, too. Please share stories from our community that are inspiring you and that you would like to see us tell.

With open hearts and minds,
