“Filmmaking is all about appreciating the talents of the people you surround yourself with and knowing you could never have made any of these films by yourself.” – Steven Spielberg
*Warning: this might be a longer post than I ever do -- but coffee and enthusiasm for our community make me wordy!
Marcus Sams and I created Bay Area Film Mixer back in 2012, and goodness gracious, it's grown from 26 at our first event, to ~250 next week at 111 Minna Gallery. The stories we hear of projects and connections that started at our events over the years not only inspire us to keep going, but motivates us to create more opportunities for networking and showcasing the best of the Bay.
Stay tuned -- more to come!
As for next week, Bay Area Film Fam, we're beyond stoked to give a shout-out to our amazing sponsors, who help us elevate this event:
Gumbo Social
Chef Dontaye is donating his soul-powered gumbo to the Mixer! He blends traditional African stews with classic French training to create gumbo that’s all about community and connection, which matches our mission. Get ready for some seriously delicious food!
CHLOE JACKMAN PHOTOGRAPHY
Fresh off working the DNC, Chloe Jackman Photography is a team of compassionate, talented, and creative humans based in the Bay Area. They believe in the power of community and representation, also in alignment with our mission — and they'll be at the event capturing the networking magic!
Fleet Wood SF
SF-based Fleet Wood inspires creativity and craft with fresh tees printed daily and workshops on dyeing techniques. Be sure to stop by and experience their unique art -- and if you need merch for your film, you'll love what Fleet Wood can help you create!
111 Minna Gallery
Our gracious host, 111 Minna Gallery, has been a beacon of art and culture in the Bay Area for over 30 years, winning awards like Best Art Gallery (2018 & 2019) and Small Business of the Year (2018). We couldn't ask for a better venue!
Marcus Sams and I can't wait to see you all next week!

CRUX JINX PRODUCTIONS, LLC is an international production company driven by telling stories that move the needle, that inspire, and that move both us as creators as much as our audience towards making the world a better, more connected and understanding place. It all began in 2012 with a simple focus: capture the power of story at a deeply human level. We’ve used every genre (documentary, feature, television and web) and traveled to remote places all over the world to produce award-winning projects of distinction.
After winning awards for short films like Nobody’s Laughing and Girls in the Grass, CRUX JINX PRODUCTIONS, LLC tackled its first feature film, Losing Her, which won Best Feature at the Noor Film Festival and the Golden Ace Award at the Las Vegas International Film Festival. Crux Jinx just released Flip The Switch, a documentary about the role of women who live in extreme poverty as change-makers, which is now being shown in film festivals worldwide.
The Crux Jinx team is now in post-production on Making It Up, a TV pilot about the San Francisco improv scene and Lost In the Sun, our second feature film, and in pre-production on Trivial, a web-series about the behind-the-scenes creation of a livestream trivia show.
ABOUT THE NAME
We often find ourselves in life at a crux, where we feel jinxed by the situation and not happy about our choices. The decision we make from that feeling, at that moment, defines us. Crux Jinx is the point from which we truly define ourselves.
Dave’s best friend growing up in Illinois, Jamie Perry, was the first to believe in his dream to be a filmmaker. Together they started filming a documentary called Dreaming in Mid-America, about the big and small dreams that people in the Midwest have… A few months later, he died from a brain tumor.
Crux Jinx Productions is named that to honor Jamie and his belief in Dave’s dream, which is now a reality.
