Readers To Eaters

Readers To Eaters READERS to EATERS is a children's book publisher with a mission to promote food literacy by publishing stories about our diverse food cultures.

FOOD LITERACY to us means "literacy about food" as well as "literacy through food."

“Literacy about food” is simply knowing what/why/how we eat. It’s about being woke to our daily food choices and understanding where our food comes from and all the trade-offs made to get the food in front of us. It’s about understanding the nested nature of our food systems and the global to local food economies

that are being resourced or not. Food literacy means listening to how your body feels after you eat and in the long-term. It means cooking, growing, fermenting some of the foods you eat when you can, and not just being a “consumer” all the time. It means talking about what you are tasting: comparing flavors and textures, acknowledging the producers and processors, critiquing the cook, creating a food memory with your friends and family.

“Literacy through food” means promoting family reading through something that we do several times everyday. It’s far easier to get parents to read with their children on something that we’re all familiar with. We also feel parents don’t have to build literacy by reading a book. Read a recipe or food labels. They tell a story too. A Harvard School of Education study found that children learn more “rare words”—sophisticated words to build a robust vocabulary—at the family dinner table than reading books. So food, in this case sharing food, is an important vehicle to not only nourish our bodies but our minds too.

A is a perfect summer outing—fun, free, and a great way to enjoy . We loved seeing this segment from Nashville, where an Eagle Scout created a at using The Thing About Bees: A Love Letter. Hadley Park is believed to be the first public park in the U.S. for African Americans, making this project even more special.

The news clip includes a great interview with the book’s creator, Nashville-based artist Shabazz Larkin, who wrote the story as a love letter to his sons—and to bees. 🐝💛

📚 The School Library Journal, n a starred review, calls the book “a holistic—and wholly original—treatment... threaded with unconditional love,” adding: “It’s brave to try to understand the things that scare us.”

Also by Shabazz:
• Farmer Will Allen and the Growing Table (his illustrator debut)
• A Moose Boosh: A Few Choice Words About Food (his author/illustrator debut)

Remembering Nelson Mandela (1918–2013) on his birthday, and reflecting on what meant to him:

“Each morning, I put on a straw hat and rough gloves and worked in the garden for two hours. Every Sunday, I would supply vegetables to the kitchen so that they could cook a special meal for the common-law prisoners. I also gave quite a lot of my harvest to the warders, who used to bring satchels to take away their fresh vegetables.”

“A garden was one of the few things in prison that one could control. To plant a seed, watch it grow, to tend it and then harvest it, offered a simple but enduring satisfaction. The sense of being the custodian of this small patch of earth offered a taste of freedom.”

We had such a fun and flavorful time last Saturday at Binding Agents for our Krautchi – Pickle Storytime event! 🥒🥒

Big thanks to our collaborators:
• Nikki Toscani from Fishtown Pickle Project
• April McGreger from The People’s Kitchen of Philadelphia

June Jo Lee kicked things off with the story behind Sandor Katz and the Tiny Wild (co-written with Jacqueline Briggs Martin), a on the renowned "fermentation revivalist". Amy followed with a live demo of the recipe from the book. Nikki brought the flavor with a tasting of both lacto-fermented and vinegar pickles—extra refreshing on a hot Philly summer day!

📖 Want to try at home? See the recipe image from the book page: https://bit.ly/4lFP2gx

Huge thanks to Catie Gainor, owner of Binding Agents, for hosting and connecting us with these incredible local fermentors, as well as young readers and eaters. We’re so thrilled to be surrounded by roomful of and passionate storytellers and flavor makers!

Happy to be part of a terrific panel to close out !
"¡En Español, Por Favor!: Building Your Spanish Kids' Language Collection" with fellow :
• Ana Eulate, Cuento de Luz - English page
• Karen Li, Groundwood Books
(Big thanks to host, Ingram Content Group!)

It was wonderful to hear fellow share their passion and thoughtful approach to publishing Spanish-language children's books. There’s real momentum—but also real challenges, especially the lack of review sources to help these books gain visibility.

One great way to discover quality Spanish books is through Bank Street College's Spanish Language Picture Book Awards (https://bit.ly/4erFEdO), which have honored all of our Spanish titles:
• El chef Roy Choi y su remix de la comida callejera (translated from Chef Roy Choi and the Street Food Remix)
• Las Espinacas de Sylvia (transalted from Sylvia's Spinach)
• Las Calabacitas de Zora (translated from Zora's Zucchini)

Each of these is also available as an from Live Oak Media—a great way for families to model together.

We’ve been fortunate to partner with USDA’s and programs, using our English and Spanish titles to support both and . But with recent budget cuts, these vital partnerships are at risk.

Here’s how you can help promote Spanish books in your library or community:
✅ Showcase them year-round
✅ Partner with local orgs serving Spanish-speaking families and host storytimes offsite
✅ Ask publishers and wholesalers for more Spanish-language options
✅ Encourage review journals to feature articles and review Spanish titles

Thanks for continuing to support inclusive publishing and food literacy for all!
