[content warning: LA fires]

Thinking about our neighbors in LA as they continue to navigate the LA fires. When fires came within two miles of their doors, Octavia's Bookstore transformed into a mutual aid hubβ€”distributing supplies, providing power access, and ensuring resources reach the community.

"This community is one with a lot of elders, it's one with folks with disabilities," [Kiki] Williams [bookstore manager] said. "Also, people are in shock, they're spread out. They're far away, so we want people to have access to these items even if they're not able to come get them themselves. So we have been able to take clothing and food and items to folks who are farther away, who don't have cars at the moment but who need them."

It's important to signal boost stories like Octavia's Bookshelf because they demonstrate what's possible when we center collective power. We take care of us.

We'd love to hear from you: How are you showing up for community and how has community shown up for you?

'I feel so powerful!' These are the words of one of our 8 filmmakers from our recent Film & Freedom Academy for LBTQIA+ BIPOC with Communication Disabilities. Over one weekend, participants turned their stories into 7 short films.

This workshop embodied what happens when we remove barriers and create truly accessible spaces for artistic expression. Each filmmaker brought their unique perspectives - from neurodivergent experiences to chronic pain narratives - crafting stories that challenge how disability is portrayed on screen.

Our mentors shared a few reflections:

'My greatest pride was seeing my mentee flourish in an artistic medium they haven't tried before.'

'I'm proud of my mentee making a film that was so raw, evocative, and filled to the brim with emotion.'

'I genuinely felt connected to a lot of people in this workshop and I felt supported.'

'I love QWOCMAP, it is such a special org to me. I think the work that y'all do is revolutionary. I love supporting folks in the creative process.'

And instructor Julia shared: 'I realized how much I can help other q***r folks in community express feelings we feel inside ourselves. We all have such impactful and important stories to tell and I definitely feel and see how much this community can bring out of all of us.'

Through these films, our community continues to shatter stereotypes, reveal lived truths, and build new worlds where disability justice and creative freedom flourish together.

As Native American Heritage Month intersects with Trans Day of Remembrance, we trace the resilient roots of our Two Spirit and trans ancestors who have shaped paths of resistance and liberation. Their stories flow through time like rivers carving new channels through colonial landscapes.

We stand resolute in our commitment to gender justice for our communities. Through film, we honor the diverse experiences of transgender, nonbinary, agender, gender nonconforming, Two Spirit, and intersex people of color who continue to expand and influence radical change.

Our filmmakers document survival, celebrate joy, and map futures where our communities thrive beyond violence. As trans and Two Spirit people of color continue to face disproportionate violence, we remain dedicated to amplifying stories that challenge oppression and nurture healing.

Today, we honor those we've lost while fighting for those still here.

Join us in supporting trans and Two Spirit filmmakers by sharing our Call for Films for ! We especially encourage submissions from trans, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, Two Spirit, and intersex filmmakers of color. qwocmap.org/submit

11/20/2024

Our recent Film & Freedom Academy for LBTQIA+ BIPOC Youth embodied our commitment to removing economic barriers for the next generation to create stories that authentically reflect their lived experiences. Through our free, culturally-specific training, these young filmmakers crafted stories that challenge stereotypes and reveal the vital, intersecting social justice issues that shape our communities.

10 powerful young voices. 9 transformative films. Countless moments of community care, creative resistance, and collective liberation. 🎬

In their own words:

'The most valuable thing I got out of this workshop is the experience of working with QWOCMAP. I've never had as much emotional support making a film than when I did the workshop, and everyone was understanding.' πŸ’«

'My experience was above and beyond…My emotional needs were also met in ways that I was not expecting.' 🌱

'I'm proud of myself for sticking through it all... By the end of the day, I was always leaving happy and that's a win for me.' ✨

'I definitely came out a better writer, organizer, and overall creative because of the workshop. I learned so much, even in the fields that I thought I knew a lot about." ✍🏽

To our visionary participants: Thank you for joining our community and bringing your full selves to this space. We look forward to your films premiering at the 2025 International Q***r Women of Color Film Festival!

β†’ This is also a reminder that our Call for Films is now open! Submit your work today! Learn more about the requirements and submit at the link in bio.
