DEMO'S THAT ROCK!
Your life experience, personality, sense of humor, imperfections, point of view, rhythm, attitude and emotional truth are part of what makes your voice marketable. The goal isn’t to take all of that away until you sound “professional.”

The goal is to become so comfortable with who you are that you can bring yourself to the copy naturally. That’s where things get interesting.

And then there’s the business side.

Voice actors sometimes tell me, “I just want to act. I hate marketing.”

I get it, but if you want a career, you’re running a business.

That doesn’t mean becoming a salesperson. It means taking responsibility for creating opportunities instead of waiting for opportunities to find you.

Send the email, introduce yourself, follow up, build the relationship, take the class, update the website, attend the event, ask the question, make the connection, do the audition. And when something doesn’t work, learn from it and adjust.

Some of the most successful people I know in this industry aren’t sitting around waiting to feel confident before they make a move. They’re moving, learning, and getting better along the way.

That matters because voiceover careers rarely happen in one giant Hollywood moment – They’re built. One relationship. One audition. One booking. One class. One email. One great session. One smart decision at a time.

So if you feel like your career has stalled, ask yourself a better question than, “Why am I not booking?”

Ask:

What can I do today that gives my career a better chance tomorrow?

Maybe it’s your demo that doesn’t quite hit the mark.

Perhaps you need to level up your coaching and who you’re learning from.

Maybe your marketing needs some tweaking.

It may be how you audition or how much you overthink your performance.

Maybe you need to reconnect with people you’ve lost touch with, explore a different genre of the business, or finally stop trying to sound like everyone else. Whatever it is, own it.

Because one of the most empowering things about this business is that you have more control than you might think.

You can’t control who books the job, but you can absolutely control how prepared you are when the opportunity arrives. And when preparation, authenticity, and opportunity finally meet?

That’s when careers start to move.

From the SOVAS VOICE ACADEMY!
Hello Paul,

There are moments in every creative life when you hit a wall. I know because I've hit more than a few.

From the outside, it rarely makes sense. Things may be going well. A project is moving forward. Opportunities are appearing. By every measurable standard, you'd expect to feel energized. Instead, you find yourself staring at the next step as though someone has quietly built a wall across the road. Sometimes the next move feels impossible. Sometimes you simply can't see what it is.

I've learned to resist the urge to panic when that happens, although I can't say I've always been successful.

For years, I assumed reaching that point meant I had lost momentum, inspiration, or confidence. Lately, though, I've begun to wonder if I've been asking the wrong question.

When I feel depleted, forcing my way forward has rarely been the answer. Looking back, I can see that what I needed wasn't more determination. It was something I didn't yet possess.

The answer has arrived in all sorts of disguises: a conversation that challenged my assumptions, a book that opened a door I hadn't noticed before, a good night's sleep, or simply enough quiet to hear my own thoughts again.

Looking back, I don't think those things appeared because I tried harder. They arrived because they expanded my thinking in ways I couldn't have managed on my own.

These days, when I find myself there again, I try to ask a different question. Not, "How do I force my way through?" but, "What am I missing?" I don't always find the answer quickly, and that's all right. I've begun to suspect that asking the right question is often the first crack in the wall. -RG

For $249.00 this little mic is awesome! I recommend it for all styles of delivery, close to the mic or hard sell 6" away. Heck I use it for my radio show. You dont have to run out and squander money on a Neumann right away.
