➕Cities designed for children often become better cities for everyone. Walkable streets, playful public spaces, safer mobility, nature-connected environments, and interactive learning areas can completely transform how people experience urban life. Designing for childhood is not only about play—it’s about accessibility, community, creativity, safety, and well-being within the city.

Yiwu Cultural Square
➕ Designed by the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Zhejiang University, this project redefines the civic identity of one of China’s most commercially driven cities through a monumental yet minimalist architectural language. Conceived as a multifunctional cultural complex, the project organizes its vast program around a three-dimensional public courtyard where sunken plazas, roof gardens, ramps, and grand stairways generate a continuous spatial promenade. Inspired by the sequencing principles of traditional Chinese gardens, the design creates an evolving experience of movement, landscape, and public interaction while establishing a bold civic landmark within Yiwu’s dense urban fabric.

➕The Hainan Science Museum transforms circulation into the core architectural experience through a continuous spiral system that connects structure, movement, and public space. Designed by MAD Architects (MAD) , the museum lifts above the ground on three concrete cores, creating open column-free galleries and a shaded public plaza below.

Inside, curved white balconies orbit a central void filled with natural light, while suspended exhibition elements reinforce the sensation of vertical movement throughout the building. The architecture avoids the static character often associated with large museums, instead creating a fluid spatial sequence shaped by motion, light, and perspective.

➕ Elizabeth Diller has redefined the relationship between architecture, culture, and the public realm through projects that challenge conventional spatial boundaries. As a co-founder of Diller Scofidio + Renfro, her work moves between architecture, urbanism, art, and performance, often transforming how people interact with cities and institutions.

From the adaptive reuse of the High Line to cultural landmarks and experimental public spaces, Diller’s projects consistently explore movement, perception, infrastructure, and collective experience as central elements of design.

➕ Cities are shaped by thousands of design decisions—and each one changes how people experience urban life. From walkability and green infrastructure to density, transportation, and public space, this carousel compares urban strategies that improve cities versus those that often make them less livable.

Urban design is never just about aesthetics. It directly impacts comfort, accessibility, social interaction, mobility, and quality of life.

Happy Spot Under the Light Rail
➕ Designed by VIASCAPE design under the direction of lead architect Sun Yijia, this urban renewal intervention transforms the neglected residual spaces beneath Shanghai’s elevated metro infrastructure into a vibrant public environment focused on movement, recreation, and community interaction. Extending beneath the viaduct of Metro Line 3, the project replaces the oppressive atmosphere of conventional underpass landscapes with bold chromatic surfaces, sports-oriented programming, and dynamic spatial sequences. Through strategic urban regeneration and human-centered design, the intervention reactivates forgotten infrastructure corridors and introduces a lively civic identity into the dense urban fabric of Xujiahui.

➕ Designed by Atelier XI (Atelier XI) the AYDC Public Art Complex transforms the mountainous landscape of Guiyang into a constellation of sculptural pavilions dedicated to reading, performance, and contemplation. Inspired by the karst caves of Guizhou Province, the architectural forms emerge from the terrain through carved geometries, suspended arches, and pointed voids shaped by light and spatial tension. Distributed across the landscape yet interconnected through the public realm, the project dissolves the boundary between architecture and nature, creating immersive civic spaces where creativity, culture, and community interaction unfold organically within the surrounding environment.
