Centenary for a King and Queen

On May 1, 1919, the King's and Queen's courses at Gleneagles (both designed by James Braid) opened for business with a blank slate and high hopes for the future.

Today--one hundred years later--the folks at the immaculate, well-appointed Gleneagles multipurpose resort facility Auchterarder, Perthshire, Scotland (now owned by Ennismore) have plenty of reason to celebrate a centenary filled with historic tales that feature the biggest names in golf (and in the case of Alan Shepard, in space).

In recognition of its history, both Gleneagles courses received an update that honors its past. Fairways were widened, bunkers strategically placed, Scottish Heather planted in places that give a nod to history and present current challenges.

One look at the photographs included here, one taken today and the other taken nearly a century ago, will give you a sense of the pride that comes with age.

Congratulations to Gleneagles for hitting this milestone.

I played my first hickory golf tournament in Canada last month at Oak Gables Golf Club & Learning Centre with the Golf Historical Society of Canada. It was my second event since winning the Stableford Division at the LinkedGolfers World Hickory Golf Festival in Golf East Lothian Scotland. I sucked but the Hamilton News covered our event. See:
