Chandeliers doing all the work now, the tree throwing gold across a parquet floor polished to a mirror, garland winding up the staircase, the city lit past the glass. The skyline Annie only ever saw from outside is now the view from her own front room.

The staircase is there for a reason. Somebody is coming down it.

Christmas morning at the Warbucks mansion, and nobody is scrubbing a floor.

Nine days ago this girl was sleeping six to a room with newspapers for blankets. Today the orphans are on their way over and the President is expected.

She sang that in a dormitory at three in the morning, guessing at the parents she had never met. Now she is standing in a room where the walls are hung floor to ceiling in gilt frames, every one of them lit, the parquet throwing the glow back up.

A doorway, a lit room beyond it, and a kid who has never seen a painting that wasn't on a soup label.

"No matter how many Rembrandts or Duesenbergs you've got, if you have no one to share your life with, if you're alone, then you might as well be broke and back in Hell's Kitchen."

Dim paneling on either side, two sconces holding the dark, and gold light spilling out of the gallery ahead. Cued as a slow push through the doorway, so the reveal happens on your timing instead of a hard cut.

The room where an eleven-year-old teaches the Cabinet a song.

Pale green walls, coffered ceiling, the Presidential seal centered above three tall windows, flags flanking the floor and Lincoln watching from the wall. Daylight across the parquet instead of marquee bulbs, because this is the one place in the show where the answer to the Depression is being argued out loud.

Then Roosevelt asks Annie to sing it again, and "Tomorrow" stops being a kid's song.

The ON AIR light is lit, and somewhere across town six orphans are crowded around a radio.

Deco gold from floor to ceiling, fluted panels, heavy drapes, a raised broadcast platform and the control booth glassed in at the side. This is Bert Healy's show, the one where the whole country hears that Oliver Warbucks is looking for Annie's parents, and the one that hands the orphans "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile."

Radio is how this story turns, and this is the room it turns in.

Two stories of books, carved paneling, banker's lamps burning green, a globe within arm's reach and a fire going against a winter-blue window. Grace stands by with her steno pad. Then she gives him the look, and he invites the Roosevelts for Christmas supper.

Two long rows of treadle machines, thread spools and scrap piled at the ends, mended clothes strung on lines along the peeling walls, and the cathedral-style Philco sitting right where the script puts it. Miss Hannigan runs this room with the radio on, picking nits out of Molly's hair while Ma Perkins plays. It is also where Grace Farrell walks in and everything changes.

Forty-five blocks on foot, and here is the front door.

"Come on you slowpokes, we gotta get to the Roxy before the prices change."

Carved stone, gilt scrollwork, a marquee packed edge to edge with bulbs, the vertical sign burning over the sidewalk and the lobby glowing gold behind the doors. End of the montage, and the destination Warbucks named back in the study when he sent the Duesenberg away.

Times Square, and the number finally arrives where it has been headed all along.

"THE SHIMMER OF TIMES SQUARE, THE PULSE, THE BEAT, THE DRIVE!"

Marquee bulbs stacked block after block, neon running up every vertical sign, searchlights raking a green-black sky, trolley tracks curving through the wet pavement. The script calls for Times Square to light up in the background. This is the whole avenue doing it at once.
