Grammy-winning Los Angeles band Ozomatli will headline the 9th annual Día de los Mu***os celebration, Avenida de Altares.

On Saturday, November 1, families across the Bay Area will gather at the Mexican Heritage Plaza for a cherished Mayfair tradition that transforms La Plaza and the surrounding streets into a vibrant tapestry of culture and community pride.

Since its debut in 2017, Avenida de Altares has grown beyond La Plaza, turning Alum Rock Avenue into a glowing river of lights, music, and altars stretching to the 101 freeway. Guests can explore a curated altar gallery woven through local businesses, join hands-on art activities for all ages, and see faces light up with colorful designs. The evening crescendos with a lively catrina costume contest, high-flying lucha libre matches, an artisanal vendor market, and mystical tarot readings — honoring the holiday’s spirit with unforgettable sights and sounds.

Two celebrated authors of our time, Jeff Chang and Garrett Hongo, come together at Montalvo for an unforgettable intergenerational conversation. Jeff Chang (2023 Fellow), author of Water, Mirror, Echo; Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop; and We Gon’ Be Alright, joins Garrett Hongo (2015 Fellow), author of Ocean of Clouds: Poems; Volcano; and The Perfect Sound, to discuss and share their thoughts on a wide range of topics that inspire them in their personal lives and work—including Bruce Lee, music, their Hawaiian ancestry, and their experiences coming of age in California.

This robust conversation offers insight into how personal heritage shapes universal human experiences.

A short Q&A will follow the discussion. Water, Mirror, Echo, and Ocean of Clouds: Poems will be available for purchase, and the authors will participate in a meet-and-greet and book signing in the Project Space Gallery.
