“Rosanna Alvarez expresses herself through all the languages a multifaceted interdisciplinary artist works with. As a painter, dancer, jeweler, and poet, among other things, she has plenty of outlets… Levity helps balance the consulting work Rosanna provides, which often includes navigating sensitive matters for governmental agencies like Santa Clara County Social Services and the Executive Offices. She provides support to the people who do the groundwork so that communities can thrive.”

Join the excitement as the School of Arts and Culture (SOAC) kicks off its festival season with its third annual Fiesta del Mariachi (FDM) celebration on Saturday, July 27, at the Mexican Heritage Plaza (La Plaza). Mariachi Sol de México de José Hernández takes the stage at FDM, captivating mariachi fans with their fresh and vibrant interpretations of traditional harmonies and iconic hits like “Yo Puedo Hacer” and “El Carretero Se Va.”

East San José never forgets its ties with local artists and musicians. As such, FDM embraces homegrown talent by featuring Bay Area legends Mariachi Azteca alongside other local mariachi groups on its stage. FDM is not just a mariachi concert; it’s a celebration of the community. La Plaza’s FDM brings diverse offerings, from savory food vendors to refreshing beer options and local crafts vendors.

Mariachi music has existed for decades in its current form, and it is an important part of Mexican culture and folklore. Their signature charro costumes and sombreros are iconic, and the traditional songs serve as a type of Mexican oral history. Learning to be a mariachi is a skill often passed down from one generation to another with great pride and reverence.

The San Jose-based Mariachi Azteca was formed in 1981. Besides performing at private and public functions, Mariachi Azteca members also teach music lessons
to students of the San Jose School of Arts and Culture at the Mexican Heritage Plaza.

Math rock, as described by Ripplings guitarist Anna Macan, is “very intricate guitar melodies, mostly finger style with different time signatures.” It’s a genre that has been described as jazz infused with rock chords and instrumentation. This fusion of styles is what gives the Ripplings a cinematic sound.

Featured: Issue 10.2, “Sight & Sound,” Keith Hames

In June, our creative community lost a healer and trusted elder.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the friends and family of Keith Hames (May 25, 1957 - June 26, 2024)

Keith left a legacy of opening hearts through the stewardship of African music, culture, and connection. Keith Hames founded Akoma Arts in 2011 and was dedicated to sharing West African music and culture. Raised on gospel and soul, he began drumming at 12 and became immersed in traditional West African music in the late 1970s. Akoma Arts, named after the Akan word for “heart,” reflected values of love and unity.

“Keith’s a healer, he’s our trusted elder, and he is crystal clear… that ceremony, culture, identity, resistance, and solidarity must be key in our lives if we want to make this world better.” - Tamara Alvarado, speaking about Keith Hames in the article.

Honor him with the community at the Keith Hames Celebration of Life at the African Ancestry Museum.

Featured: Kuumba West African Dance - Tiye Garrett,

Join Kuumba at Creekside Socials on Friday, July 12, from 6 to 7 pm for an educational West African dance session with live drumming.

Tiye Garrett began dancing professionally with the West African dance group Akoma Arts, founded by Keith Hames. When Akoma eventually closed its doors, Garrett tried to fill the void by dancing alone. She quickly realized she needed to share her expression, and the community felt the same way. She founded Kuumba LLC in 2022, emphasizing West African Dance and rhythms, community, and providing spaces for creativity to thrive.

‘Kuumba’ means creativity in the African Language of Swahili and is the sixth principle of the annual celebration of Kwanzaa. That sixth principle guides followers ‘to always do as much as we can, in the way we can, to leave our community more beautiful than when we inherited it.’ That meaning exemplifies Kuumba’s purpose in promoting self-care, fitness, educational growth, and overall wellness through body movement. Kuumba works to create spaces where all are welcome, where there is a sense of belonging, connection, health, and serving others.

Silicon Valley Shakespeare presents Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
On the fog-bound streets of Victorian-era London, Henry Jekyll’s experiments with exotic powders and tinctures have brought forth his other self: Edward Hyde, a sensualist, and villain free to commit the sins Jekyll is too civilized to comprehend. When Hyde meets a woman who stirs his interest, Jekyll fears for her life and decides to end his experiments. But Hyde has other ideas, so the two sides battle each other in a deadly cat-and-mouse game to determine who shall be the master and who is the servant.

Blog Feature: We Are In Our Urban Native Era: How fashion reflects stories of the land. By Gl-o,

In their new Native fashion blog series, Content photographer and writer Gl-o attended the California Academy of Sciences, fashion show featuring the works of The Hijabi Chronicles, Áo Dài Festival, .sj and Urban Native Era, — an Indigenous fashion brand that aims to increase Indigenous visibility around the world with their famous, “You Are On Native Land” branding and streetwear.

“To be indigenous is to recognize that you are part of the land, and just like our own bodies, we need to protect and take care of the well-being of the land as well. Native fashion continues to share the stories of the land and remind us that without the land, we would not be able to survive. Fashion has a unique ability to be intimate with people by default, simply because they are the closest things we put to our skin. They are shaped like our bodies. Embodying the stories of the land and encapsulating the ongoing stories native people have and share.”

San José Made will do its 2nd Annual SJMADE Summer Fair at the Santa Clara Convention Center on July 6-7, 2024. This is going to be a large-scale, super fun, potentially super funny indoor summertime festival featuring 300+ makers, artists, designers, and creative small businesses within seven themed sections:

“The morning before an art event, you might find James Mertke unloading the Tetris puzzle of art pieces and display shelves from his car. It’s been a little over a year since James started participating in art markets, and although he’s still learning the ropes, he’s grown a lot since his first event. He’s created an eye-catching display with hand-painted signage and a variety of shelves.”

Featured: Issue 3.2, “Heat,” Sally Ashton

Join Sally THIS Saturday at Beyond Text Bookstore, in Los Gatos for an Author event and Book Talk. Sally will read from and discuss her new book Listening to Mars and talk about her poem that is heading to the Moon early next year.

June 22, 1pm
318 N Santa Cruz Ave, Los Gatos

Listening to Mars serves as a record of our national transit, one a journey from there—before the Covid-19 pandemic—to here—a new now. Our microscopes pinpoint a virus; our telescopes search the edges of the Universe; we look, as we always have, to the heavens for comfort and clarity. Underlying our global social turmoil is the environmental emergency we find ourselves facing, and the irony of seeking new worlds while degrading if not destroying our own. With empathy and precision, Sally Ashton moves through the time of our confinement and an increasingly fractured world, trying to tell the story, to bear witness, to find a way through. Trying to find the glints of light in the journey we are still traveling.

Creative Culture

Content Magazine is a bimonthly magazine promoting the people, events, and businesses of the South Bay. With headquarters in San Jose, Content Magazine articulates the innovative and creative culture that is unique to Silicon Valley.

We believe in getting people together with a common goal, helping them explore their talents while producing something that will be a benefit to the city.

Content brings awareness of the people, events and opportunities that are in our city, as we connect together through an aesthetically pleasing forum. Content brings pride and hope to our community, highlighting the distinctiveness which is a destination for visitors and improves the quality of life for our citizens. Through multi-media, web technology and a beautifully printed magazine, access is provided for people to engage in each others’ businesses and creative endeavors.

Call to Creatives. Photographers, designers, illustrators, musicians, writers and all other Santa Clara County residents interested in contributing Content Magazine, please contact us. Email your idea and proposal to [email protected] We look forward to collaborating with you. Be Content.
