Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) is the precursor to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and it is the newest trend in cannabis extracts. THCA is not intoxicant as THC, but it converts to it through heat treatment undergoing the decarboxylation process. This compound has multiple benefits, and it may open new doors for the cannabis industry.

Why THCA over THC extracts

THCA extracts have a higher purity, no smell, and more versatility in terms of how it can be utilized compared to THC containing extracts. [1] THCA may have many health benefits including brain protective in the treatment for Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s, anti-inflammatory properties, anti-tumor, appetite stimulant and anti-insomnia among others. Nevertheless more studies and clinical trials should be done in order to assess THCA potential. [2] Overall, THCA has similar benefits to THC, but without the undesired psychotropic effect.

Distillation of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) leads to one of the most potent cannabis products on the market. However, pure THC distillate lacks all but THC. In other words, it’s missing many but not all of the desirable characteristics of cannabis plants, such as taste and smell. Fortunately, distillate manufacturers and even consumers can remedy this by adding back to the distillate what was lost.

Terpenes and THC Distillation

Cannabis terpenes are chemical compounds that produce the smells and tastes consumers find pleasing. They also have powerful medicinal properties and have attracted the attention of the pharmaceutical and health industries for their medical potential.

Solventless concentrates are quickly becoming the new gold standard in the cannabis extracts niche. It’s one of those fairly rare cases of simplicity meeting luxury.
According to BDSA, a cannabis market analyst firm, in the first quarter of 2018, there were only 4 rosin v**e cartridge products sold in Colorado. Fast forward to the first quarter of 2021, and they became 160. That’s a 40-fold increase in 3 years!
The same trend can be observed in California, going from 16 to 28 products in the same period. The reasons behind the rapid rise in solventless concentrates’ popularity are a few.
Safety and Purity
This is the first and most obvious one. In fact, it’s perfectly logical not just within the cannabis world, but the worlds of wellness, foods and drinks as a whole in which safety and purity are becoming a bigger priority as a result of our increased access to information on health and the hazards to it.

09/26/2022

Typically cannabis potency is determined by the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content, the main psychotropic cannabis constituent, going from 4% in the 80’s up to highly concentrated products like shatter, oil or edibles containing even 95% THC. Nevertheless THC is not the only responsible for the potency of a cannabis variety. It is a common mistake that people consider the THC content strictly and directly related to the healing capabilities of cannabis, but it should be noticed that the effects depend on the overall plant composition: cannabis produces hundreds of different compounds including various phytocannabinoids, terpenoids, sterols and flavonoids. The synergistic effect of all the cannabis constituents is called “entourage effect” and it was first postulated by Mechoulam and Ben-Shaba in 1998. [1] According to their hypothesis, the action of major active cannabinoids can be enhanced by other minor cannabis constituents which contribute both in the sense of additional therapeutic effect or in enhancing the premeability of cannabinoids in human tissues. [2] There is evidence that a full-spectrum cannabis extract has more effect compared to a purified single cannabinoid.

As the delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC-8) market continues to grow, customers are beginning to put an emphasis on quality. [1] Live resin extract is a product that not only preserves terpene profiles of cannabis plants, but it can be made in order to contain high levels of THC-8.

What is Live Resin Extraction?

During traditional extraction, cannabis is dried, and often heated, leading to degradation of many thermolabile compounds such as terpenes. Instead, live resin extraction relies on freezing the plant material right after the harvesting and using cold solvents to perform the extraction in order to keep the plant composition closer to its original natural state.

In recent years the cannabis industry has exploded and one of the products quickly gaining popularity is cannabis resin which is a concentrate. [1] Cannabis concentrates are available in many colors, chemical profiles, and consistencies.

Unsurprisingly, understanding what cannabis resin is can be challenging since there are different types. In our article, we’ll discuss the difference between live resin and cured resin to better understand which is right for you.

Before identifying what live resin and cured resin are and the difference between the two, we want to briefly detail what exactly resin is. In the case of cannabis, resin is a blanket term for concentrates. A resin is typically a waxy and sticky substance that is produced by the trichomes of a cannabis plant. A cultivator will extract the resin from cannabis plant’s trichomes, the tiny frost-like crystals found on a bud.

pH measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, but how does it affect phytochemical stability? We know that the lower the pH, the more acidic the solution, and the higher the pH, the more basic or alkaline the solution. These changes in pH can have a significant effect on plant phytochemicals.

Phytochemicals are naturally occurring compounds that are found in plants, responsible for their organoleptic properties and resistance against bacteria, fungi, pests and environmental stress. Some phytochemicals also have important health benefits and are commonly used as active pharmaceutical ingredients to treat various issues and diseases. For example, some phytochemicals act as antioxidants, protecting cells from damage caused by free radicals.

The stability of phytochemicals during the extraction process is affected by many factors, including pH.

Pressure is extremely important in the extraction and refinement processes of organic materials, including Cannabis derived products. Cannabis contains over 400 chemical entities, with 80-100 of those being cannabinoids. [1] Consuming unrefined Cannabis will thus expose consumers to all 400 of these chemicals, some of which may have desirable effects and some of which may be toxic. [2] Therefore, laboratory methods to extract desired compounds and refine them can help ensure a purer product. Pure, refined products are not only important to ensure reliability in research efforts on Cannabis products, they also help protect the users from undesired exposures to toxic solvent residues, pesticides, heavy metals etc.

There are numerous ways to extract cannabinoids such as cannabidiol (CBD), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), or other classes of compounds like terpenes or flavonoids from Cannabis plants. The most popular techniques involve using solvents to extract the desired plant components and then evaporating the solvent away, thus leaving the desired extract. Many laboratories use supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2 ) with properties between a liquid and gas: in this state CO2 expands like a gas to fill its container, while also keeping the density of a liquid. The critical point in the case of CO2 is reached at 31.1 °C and 73.8 bar.

The pH level shows the acidity or basicity of a particular aqueous solution and represents the logarithm of the concentration of hydrogen cations in a solution. In relation to cannabis, the pH spectrum levels affect nutrient availability and the overall health and structure of the plant.

Where should cannabis soil fall on the pH scale?

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14, with 7 as the middle value corresponding to a neutral pH. When it comes to determining which end of the pH scale a compound lies there are two extremes: values that are higher than 7.0 are considered alkaline or basic, while those lower than 7.0 are acids. [1] The typical pH range that cannabis was found to thrive was determined typically as anywhere from 4.0 to 7.0. However researchers at North Caroline State University (NCSU) did find that “cannabis is not prone to iron deficiencies when the substrate pH nears 7.0”. [2]

As the botanical extraction market grows and becomes increasingly competitive, manufacturers look for new ways to increase extraction efficiency and yield. A botanical extraction business hinges on the ability to extract as many of the desired botanical compounds from the plant material without degrading or compromising them. Most of this comes down to the extraction conditions, solvent and the used technique.

While research is generally being conducted on specific plants and compounds, there is progress being made into understanding which conditions are ideal for maximum extraction yields. Researchers have found that pH does play a significant role in how effective a solvent is at extracting the desired compounds.
