Based on the official election data from the Hays County Elections Department, the turnout numbers for both the March 3 primary and the May 26 runoff elections show a clear picture of voter engagement for each party.
​Here is the exact breakdown of how many people cast ballots:
​1. The Primary Election (March 3, 2026)
​The primary saw a historic surge in local participation, crushing previous midterm turnout records with 27.22% of total registered voters casting a ballot. For the first time since the 2020 presidential cycle, Democratic ballots outnumbered Republican ones in the county.
​Democratic Primary: 34,049 voters (17.65% of registered voters)
​Republican Primary: 18,686 voters (9.68% of registered voters)
​2. The Primary Runoff Election (May 26, 2026)
​As expected by local election officials, turnout dropped significantly for the mid-summer runoffs, hovering around 5% to 6% for both parties. However, the tables turned on participation limits, with more Republicans turning out for high-profile statewide runoffs (like the Paxton/Cornyn U.S. Senate race) than Democrats.
​Republican Runoff: 12,918 voters (6.63% of registered voters)
​Democratic Runoff: 10,510 voters (5.40% of registered voters)
