How to balance being a 4.5 GPA student and being a varsity dancer.
Janaiya Leticia Owen’s ‘26 is a senior at MHHS who spends a lot of time dancing. She’s on the varsity dance team, performing at games, practicing with teammates and
competing. but even with all of that she maintains a 4.5 GPA and tutors other students.
Dance is a big part of her life but school is just as important. She puts the same effort with classes as she does with practice.
for Janaiya dance is more than a sport, it’s a discipline that pushes her to do better and
stay focused.
Janaiya Leticia Owen,
‘26 said “I make sure to find time to study after school and
complete all my work.” She also mentions “When in practice I make sure to put my all into learning the dances.” She talks about not putting only one hundred percent on one
thing because then you only do good on one task while you could make your day to day 50/50.

Mrs. Martinez Alejandre has impacted the Latino student body at Mission Hills by creating programs and encouraging them to be more than what they believe they are.
¨Exposing students to different opportunities¨ (Mrs. Martinez Alejandre, School Counselor)
Mrs. Martinez Alejandre, along with School Psychologist Mr. Martinez, has created a program named Raíces that has encouraged many children from a Hispanic background. This program has exposed them to new things that may help them in the future. They try to incorporate many small aspects of Hispanic culture to make them feel welcomed and safe. Principal Baker and Assistant Principal Reyes have been huge supporters of them, allowing them to come together to discuss how to make our campus a better place for all students.
¨Dream Big¨(Mrs. Martinez Alejandre, School Counselor)
Mariposas is led by Mrs. Martinez Alejandre alongside Mrs. Segal and Mrs. Ríos. They allow Latinas to feel welcome in society and even within school culture. Empowering them to ¨dream big¨ and discover themselves with their help. They help them have new encounters with a bigger picture they could have never believed they could create. Supporting them to acknowledge what they are capable of.
Mrs. Martinez Alejandre has been emotionally and physically impacted by every one of these students. ¨They have impacted me¨ (Mrs. Martinez Alejandre, School Counselor). She is always willing to help in any way she can. This has brought her closer to her roots and even more advocate for the Hispanic Community.

The future center is a helpful space that guides you through opportunities and internships that are able to benefit you in the path you choose. Students can come in any time, and schedule appointments to discuss job interviews, colleges, resumes and more.
They now have a career closet whenever you have a last-minute interview, and need to look your best! Every year they have a handful of different schools come in and showcase
options for those looking to go into a four year, community, or looking to just start working. The space is peaceful, come in any time!

Cross Country is a sport of true grit. Athletes shown are Isaiah Huffman, ‘27, Simone Soricelli ‘27, Sehna Fiamor, ‘27, Esther Seo, ‘28, and Valentina Miyoshi, ‘27. The team are student athletes first. Soricelli is shown doing classwork in Mrs. Dwyer’s AP Lang classroom. Soricelli is an all A student with AP classes while maintaining her spot on the varsity team. When preparing for a meet, the athletes stretch so they won’t get injured. Huffman is stretching and preparing for his varsity race at the Grit N’ Grind meet at CSUSM on Sept. 27. The teams at Grit N’ Grind demonstrated what hard work looks like and was a hopeful meet for the freshmen as Abiel Hailey, ‘29, PR’d along with Piper Kruse, ‘29. The course was repetitive and dry but the team kept pushing to prove that they belonged at this invitational. With the cheering of their teammates on their side, they were able to complete the race with a strong pace and stride. The support from fellow teammates is what makes meets encouraging and worth it. Keep up the hard work, Grizzlies!
